Hey President Obama, how about kicking your own behind?

shiner

Nice article on exactly what I have been saying about the President's response to the disaster going on in Gulf. His cool, detached approach has been going on for too long and he has made himself look wishy washy on a near Carteresque level. To say he is looking for some ass to kick now is almost laughable, he should have been looking for and kicking it from the very beginning.

Heh I felt the same way when I saw the article pop on cnn.com. A little late to be talking "tough".

Who said anything about private enterprise? In case you missed it, there is a giant oil slick in the Gulf that needs cleaned up. Why should we have to wait for BP to do it? Whether it's man-made disaster or natural disaster (Katrina), the government should provide support/relief. In this case, that relief should be to assist in cleanup and to prevent it from reaching the beaches. They could always send the bill to BP and I would hope that they do. It is definitely BP's fault, no arguing that. But why the fuck do we have to wait for them to clean it up?

Instead, we get the dumbass response: We are going to sue you!!

When I was in college (18 yrs. ago), a professor made a statement that always stuck with me: America will send lawyers to find out whose fault an issue is while Japan will use engineers to fix the problem.

Sure as shit seems like thatss what is going on here.

No, he does not mean that you fucking moron. The gulf spill is a disaster of epic proportions and mitigating the damages is a responsibility of all parties involved and affected by the accident. This includes the federal government as they grant the license of the private enterprise to operate. Of course simpleminded folk like you can't quite grasp ideas outside the lefty talking points spoon fed to you at the Kos and HufPo.......

What is he suppose to do? This is a private company, that had an accident. This is not a disaster that the government had the authority to go in and take control over. It does not matter how epic something is. Short of him taking over the damn company there is really nothing he can do besides assisting the company. He does not have the a legal authority to do any more than he already has.

With a snappy thread title like, " Hey President Obama, how about kicking your own ass?",
my initial knee jerk response is, hey shiner, why don't you kick your own ass for all the good it will do!

Here we are six weeks into the damn problem, at best the pipe is 50% capped, so we will double the amount of oil leaked in 12 more weeks.

At least Obama did what was initially needed, he stopped further offshore drilling. But INHO, as a collective we, we have been super slow investigating all the reasons this happened. And by extension, what we need to do to prevent mistakes of this nature from happening again. And for investigations we don't need a single lawyer, and I would advocate not letting a single lawyer participate, and then go on to draft bi-partisan regulations that will be effective to make sure no cost saving short cuts are taken.

Because as I look at the scanty information released to the general public, it is those short cuts that got BP into this mess even the best engineering minds cannot fix by present technology. The blow out presenter value was never tested when its known they have a high rate of fraction defectives, and all up and down the line BP ignored every clear warning sign in this well. But its not just this well, its a embedded BP corporate strategy that has led to BP having the worst safety record in the industry.

How can we trust the clowns at BP given that, and how can we expect any politician to fix what BP broke, especially in this toxic gridlock Washington political climate?

Having said that, I am not sure if I should just cry or kick my own butt in self flagellation.

It was the American voter who had to make sure we were electing people who would protect our environment, and we allowed GWB to dismantle all regulations, and sadly Obama has been too slow to re-regulate.

What resources does the United States government have for cleaning this up that is not already being utilized?

quick, play the race card!

"All the president is, is a glorified public relations man who spends his time flattering, kissing, and kicking people to get them to do what they are supposed to do anyway."

I don't hold Obama responsible for this mess, but I don't feel like I've seen a lot of flattering, kissing, and kicking coming from his White House.

dealing with crisis is the stuff administrations are made in and Obama acts like this is an imposition on him... it's kinda like the 3 am phone call ad. Obama answered the phone, shrugged, and rolled back to sleep so he could get in his 8 hours.

First the news conference where he mentions his daughter and now this, I was never his fan but i gotta tell you... this guy has set up benchmarks for lows in presidency that wont be broken for decades or even centuries

The fact the accident affected the US territory already makes it the government's business. As someone already suggested, the problem should have been fixed long ago instead of playing the blame game.

That's only partially correct. You still need engineers to find out what went wrong for the lawyers.

Again, I would like to ask - what resources does the United States government have that is not currently being utilized?

This is not a rhetorical question. I just see a lot of people blaming Obama, but I don't see any suggestions as to what he should have done. Maybe there is an obvious step(s) that he should have taken to clean it up, but I haven't read about it yet.

I agree about the daughter. The norm has always been that the president's children are off limits to the media. Now this guy is using them a political props.

Obama was elected too late, GWB already set the new low benchmark standards no President will ever be able to even come close to equaling.

But stay back on thread topic, a potential drill baby drill Palin presidency just might be able to challenge the mark set by GWB.

They grew up in front of a TV. They want him to put on a better show. Something with pointless yelling and and chest pounding and the Navy and big explosions. Learn the lessons of 9-11. Maybe invade Mexico. Do something, even if it causes more problems than it solves.

I really dont know what people expect Obama to be doing. Thousands of vessels are out scouring the gulf trying to clean this thing up, while BP is busy trying to mitigate the release of oil at the source, which the government is entirely unequipped to do.

Would everyone feel better if we sent the navy down there? Outside of public relations stunts to give people the impression the government is doing more, theres really nothing more that can be done.
