I'm trying to get my scanner, HP Scanjet 3300C USB, to work. This machine is a lowly HP Pavilion 4533. I got rid of the win98 HP install and just loaded plain 98SE. Under the HP install, the scanner/usb worked....now it doesn't. This machine is a piece of crap, i know, but i'd really like to get the scanner to work. Please, please give me some help on how I can get the USB working. Thanks in advance.

PS: From USBLOG.txt

Pre-Install status
USB host appears to be non-Intel.

You need to make sure that USB is installed.
It is supported natively under Windows 98SE.

Go to:
1. Start \ Settings\ Control Panel \ System \ Device Manager
and make sure there is a USB Controller installed.
It exsists, go to 2.

If there is a conflict, it will have a yellow dot with
and ! inside it. If so, delete it and Reboot.(You will need the Win98 CD)

If none exsists, check the Windows INF (hidden folder) Directory for a file USB.INF.
Right-click on the file, then click install. Go to 2.

When Windows 98 detects New Hardware, point it to the Windows 98SE CD.
Follow the prompts, but do not reboot. Go to 2.

2. Un-install the scanner software and driver.

3. Power-down the PC.

4. Un-plug scanner from PC.

5. Power on the PC.
Once in Windows, install the Drivers for the scanner.
It should prompt you to plug-in the Scanner.

Once the scanner is detected, go to:
Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ Scanners and Cameras
If everything went correctly, you should see the HP Scanner listed.

There is a controller installed. I went through the rest of your steps....but no luck. If I go to Add New Hardware, the scanner is not detected, nor can I install from a driver list. For some reason the list only has kodak products. Thanks for the help.

You cannot install a USB scanner by Detecting New Hardware.

The device driver is needed to scan the USB bus to find the firmware from the scanner (USB device).
Thats why you need to install the driver with the USB device unplugged.
