Hey, military veterans. A quick question.

Just wondering if any former military veterans here on ATOT who've seen combat are feeling any anxiety or minor flashbacks when listening to these live broadcasts with gunfire, artillery, explosions, and all the typical sounds of war in them. For me they bring back some very painful, vivid memories of combat, of loosing friends, and of facing death head on and winning by a miracle and a prayer. I can't say it's fear, but it sure feals like it a bit. So long as I don't hear those sounds, I'm fine. But as soon as I hear them on the radio, or see/hear them on the TV, those thoughts, memories, feelings, all flood back. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm not sure I'm alone, but at the same time I'm curious of these feelings. I was fine until this war started. Then these memories of vicious, bloody, murderous heavy combat come back. I hate it. I wish I could forget about it personally. Those are memories I don't want to recall. (wipes away a tear for his buddies that were kia) 🙁

Memories of long rides in planes shuttling cargo to and from areas yet unclassified...

...and I dont believe that you've seen any combat.

Nah, I don't have any flashbacks or any other bad memories. I do remember all the emotions of goodbyes, uncertainties, and
anxieties of heading to Persian Gulf in 1991.

I tend to agree with you.

No "Flashbacks". Definitely memories from seeing the site and sounds. Heart races a little, seeing/hearing the ship launched Tomahawks and the incoming alerts (I served aboard the USS Missouri BB-63/Desert Storm). Site and sounds are the same, except for the lack of 16" gunfire from the Battleship. Always sucked donning the Chem/Bio gear.

Nothing wrong having memories, and can't say that mine are unpleasant (not that war is pleasant). I volunteered, I was well trained, I performed my job, I believed in the effort. No regrets - and nothing to complain about. I'd do it all over again and if I didn't have the wife & kids, I'd have re-upped after 9/11 and sought a billet that was going to the Gulf.

I think about a time back when . . .but I don't dwell too long.
Though I do look at this incursion with an analytical eye.
Two distinct things stand out:

This time we are not holding back, but letting todays forces move without political interference.

This enemy is but a shell of the enemy in 'Nam - they fought and these don't.

Well I am a combat vet with a couple of hearts and I can tell you that I have seen some really terrible things, do I have flashbacks? Hell NO! I dont have to have any. I have never tried to put any of it out of my mind, I want to remember how war is and what happens in war.
I know some that have had what you suggest but I have my own ideas why this happens, but I will not state them here.
Do you feel guilty? or do you feel fear. That is the question that you must ask yourself. if the answer is yes to either of these questions you have a mental problem and should seek counciling.

Bleep
