Hey KW! Klinux question...

KW- Is it possible to setup Klinux so that I can just boot the machine up and have it start cracking with a client setup the way I want it?

What I'm looking for is. A way to modify Klinux so that it does a root login automatically, then unpacks the dnet client, copies over a dnet.ini file off the floppy that's good to go and then starts the client up.

The reason why I ask is that I have a P233MMX w/32meg RAM that sits in the corner with nothing but a power cord and ethernet cable going to it. 98SE is too unstable to depend on, plus it's only got a 420MB HDD and the serial ports on the board are dead. 🙁 I love the way Klinux works with it, but if the power ever goes out (which it did last night) I have to move the machine so I can get a KB and Monitor on it for a bit.

Thanks in advance!

No, when you download Klinux, you are downloading a compressed image that the rawrite utility puts on the floppy disk.

To do that, I'd have to pretty much make a custom version for you.
Then I'd have to make the next guy a custom version also, and the next guy, and the next guy.
I'd be doing nothing all day, but doing custom versions for people, and still not be able to keep up with demand.

Sorry, but I don't see that happening.
I need to spend my time making a living.

So far as Klinux has been hosted on Dale's webserver, Klinux has had 10499 files downloaded, 172763 Kbytes of date moved and 11693 hits since Sept. 2000.

If it is any consolation to you, once I have my DSL installed, I'll be hosting Klinux myself.
There I'd like to let people build their own custom version off my webserver.

Kind of like what the people over at flamingtext.com have done.
There you can use Gimp for Linux off of their server to build custom button, banners and other images to download or save on your machine, all with just pointing and clicking, and entering some parameters.

Then, everyone will have their own custom Klinux setup for their needs.

I'll have a generic kernel loading the modules you'll need to activate your nic, you can choose the dnet client that best suits your needs, and have the client compressed into the Klinux image along with your personal dnetc.ini file.

Won't that be COOL? 😎

But it'll take a little time to get all setup, and I'm sure it'll have a few bugs to get worked out, but it'll be a fun project for me.

So Kilowatt,
In order to help you make a living, what would you charge a person for a custom "boot from floppy" distro? 😉

I wasn't looking for you in particular to make a custom boot disk for me. I was more or less wanting to know if it was possible at all. I'm quite green when it comes to Linux but learning more all the time. 🙂 I didn't know if there was a way to do something similar to editing the config.sys or autoexec.bat in DOS, but for Klinux instead.

I'll check out the thing on flamingtext, maybe I'll pick up a few ideas to play with. Good luck on the config project, I'm already excited about it. I'm sure MANY of us will be even more forever grateful for your contributions when it's done! 😀

Over 10,000 downloads since September?

Zowie!

/me thinks there is more than just TA members running Klinux!

Ray, you had your change way back with Klinux-v1, about the time I sent you those P75s.
But you passed it up. 😛

That's the whole point Choralone, Klinux is an image that makes a floppy bootable.
A minumal distro to make it all fit on that floppy.
There is nothing that will let you write something to file and then re-make the image.

I think your right Viz, but being an "Open Source" freak, I'll not restrict Klinux.
I did however put an ansi penguin with an american flag behind him on the log-in screen for the next release of Klinux. 😀

KW- Thanks. That's the answer I was looking for. I had pretty much figured that Klinux was setup that way but wasn't totally sure. I'll just be hoping the power doesn't go out too often until you get the custom configs up and running. 🙂

Hey KW, that new custom thing you're making sounds REALLY cool!!

I just got a thought, how about linking it with Adul's dnetc.ini generator? that way you won't have to do anything with the .ini at all, and people can have more or less the EXACT .ini they want already 😉 Just a thought, and it might make things easier for you 😎

With love and respect your fellow TA member
