Hey Hoosiers---any of you use wimax

Lemon law

Lifer
I live in a rural area---no dsl or cable available--satallite is too rich for my blood.
But I have found two wimax type outfits that service my area. And Those companies
are HOOSIER BROADBAND and FAIRNET LLC.

I am still in process of getting more details--neither appear to use a full 802.20 implementation of wimax.---but either might offer way better than dial up at affordable rates.

But I am wondering if any here have experience with these companies---and could maybe steer me clear of any giant hassles if they are not for real--or offer me user experiences and similar feedback.

Sharing a dial up connection with my wife leaves us both starved for bandwidth.

is Wimax a wireless ISP?

Have you looked for a WISP in your area? There is plenty of gear that gets 10-15 miles from LOS wireless.

Thanks for the responce nweaver,

Yes both outfits are wireles isp's---looks like fairnet will be out of range for me---but what do you mean by the terms wisp and los?

thanks again nweaver,

Since both web sites don't publish their tower locations---the jury is still out on that line of sight question. And a pile of other questions---I have a email request in---but no responce
from Hoosier Broadband yet---but fairnet has given me a definite no

But on that pile of other questions thing----I am interested in getting user experiences from any who have similar installations.

usually the either know, or we go out and do a sight survey (I moonlight as a wireless ISP tech sometimes)

Looks like you know what you are talking about nweaver,

But I am down to one and only one possible provider---and really need some feedback from other users of Hoosier broadband.

I have a request in with these people via email---they advertise 24/7 support---no toll free telephone number---and the one call I made reached an answering machine saying everyone was out. Yet I seem to be in the reception area of their site map.

But one can google Hoosier broadband and get their web site---can any comment on the technology they use?

Have you had any luck with Hoosier Broadband? I am having these same issues and am concerned that it does not bode well if I go with them and there is a problem.
I have found out that they use Motorola equipment and that they do have coverage in my area but that is bout it...
Anyone?...

I did finally get in contact with Hoosier Broadband---they won't come out to do a check unless I agree to install their equipment if they give a thumbs up.
Installation is at least $350.00---and then something like $32.00/mo. on a 2 year contract.

I have decided to wait to see if stronger competition moves into the area---but I sure would like to talk to some of their customers.

Only other option I've found is North Central Communications ( www.northcc.net ) They have been in area awhile but their connection rate is lower and from what I've heard sporatic. $40. a month for 512k down 256k up and equipment cost between $200-$400. On the up side they do answer the phone...
