Hey guy

I went into longs today and the cashier was an older man (probably about 60 or 65). When I came up to the register he greeted me with "Hey guy", and then when I was about to leave he said "Hey thanks guy". Basically he was using "guy" instead of "dude" or "man", but I have never heard this before 😕😕 Is it common in other parts of the country? I've lived in California all of my life and I have never heard anyone call someone else "guy"

I've heard it on very rare occasions. I also think I've seen it in movies and read it in books. For some reason I imagine a New England accent when I hear it in my head.
