Congratulations Lanman. Well done.

Edit: How many years does he have in? I'm always curious about how fast the other services promote.

Do you think that there is a big variance among services? I always thought it had more to do with the individual unit, and right place at the right time, than the particular service.
I made E-5 in well under 2 years, but I was cadre in an Evac Hospital that filled out its TO&E rather quickly in 1965, more or less pushing me up the ladder.
LANMAN - Congratulations and thanks!!

It depends on which branch of the service. What you MOS (job) is. How clean you keep your nose. Also on your age. If you join when your 30 you sort of get the gold ol boy treatment as that you need promoted more quickley if you do your studying for your rank advancement, and if you keep your nose clean and arn't putting beer in you big coat to have more than allowed. Also if you came into the service with a technician degree or come college you would get an automatic bump in position.
So in some cases you could make in the army an E-5 in 2 years or sargent and that is as low as you could get busted if you did get a higher rank.
If you were young and dumb and chose a poor MOS got fat or whatever etc you could take a long time to gain any rank.
