And before any SETI members panic its not from my SETI fleet😉

My GFs father has a K6-3 400 with 256Mb RAM ,I haven't bothered putting SETI on it cos its not on too often (though more than it used to be) & would hardly add to my output.I've had it in the back of my mind to run a DC project on it that has small 'data blocks' ,in the old days I choose RC5 64 for that ,but thats now over & I don't want to do RC5 72.

I read in the recruiting thread that 'even an old machine' can show good numbers (aka stats!😀)
Before I ask him if I can install a DC proj on it I need some basic info.

He's on dial up that can only manage 38k:disgust: ,so what kind of download/upload times are we talking?
How much RAM does it take when running?
Is it real easy to flush & fetch new data? (he's very low on PC knowledge!😉)

Anyway ,sell it to me!😀

Oh forgot to say ,he was a chemcial scientist at BP so this project may well grab his interest too🙂
 
-the upload/download requirements are not too outlandish. it should work okay on dialup.

-for that one computer dialup wouldnt be too bad. its not going have as much data to upload of course.

-this current protein uses around 75 megs of RAM when using the -rt(extra ram switch). this is not necessary, but it helps to speed the client up. and different proteins vary on how much RAM they use.

-well since on dialup i would disable net access. then its a matter of hitting upload on dfgui(excellent 3rd party monitoring/management app) to flush data.

-when a new protein is released that is around 6-7 meg of downloading, then youre done downloading until the next protein, typically around a month.

well ive answered you questions to best of my knowledge. i hope they have helped.

6-7Mb download? damn thats a fair bit!,I'm not sure he'll go for that🙁 ,bear in mind this is a 56k dialup which can only manage 38k......hmm I'll have to work out how long that would take(he pays per min for his connection).

I suppose the other way I could do it is to install the DF client here on my main rig ,down load the new protein & then transfer the whole client to my USB flash drive ,& then to his rig.
Any problems with that?

It could still upload via his dialup I guess, what sort of uploads are we talking about?
Also could you give me a ball park figure on RAM useage without -rt ?

It would be nice to get some new computing power to the DF team! Thanks for considering it !!!

I am running the client on Win98SE, it is quite stable (had no problems whatsoever so far). The only problems i've had were in connection with the proein generation change...but they were all easily corrected.

Well I estimate that on his 38k connection it would take about 24mins to download 6Mb ,he might be OK for that

I just spotted this at their site you linked

The statistics and protein upload amounts to approximately 30K of data uploaded to our sever approximately 2-3 times per hour

He wouldn't be on 24/7 ,but probably at least once per 2days ,bare min.

the uploads are rather small, bear in mind since is a slow comp there will be less data to upload.

i think each gen is around 20k maybe...dont quote me on that. i dont have any gens horded up here @ work, i cant remember

RAM usage without using -rt.....i have no idea! i havent used it otherwise, looks like around 15-16 megs.

the only time limit is that the upload needs to occur before a protein change. its typically once a month that the protein gets changed.

and what you could do is just download the .zip file on your computer, throw it on the pen drive and unzip to his computer, there wouldnt be anything strange with that. the newest protein already comes in that zip file. so you wouldnt have to download anything to his computer.
 
Ok ,cool ,so it'll upload parts of 'crunched' protien when there done ,it doesn't have to do the whole protein in a month!🙂

I'll see if I can ask him in the next few days.
 
Just an update ,me & my gf split up just under 3weeks ago so I probably won't be able to assimlate that rig in the near future.Afraid I didn't get to ask him before hand.
However me & Cat (aka pussycat,my now X gf) are staying friends so it isn't totally ruled out😉
