Hey they need the money so they can pay for their Cadillacs and Satellites

Hush, little baby, don't cry like that,
God's gonna buy you a cadillac.
He's chosen you to do his will,
You can spread the word in your coupe de ville.

So jump in the river and learn to swim,
God's gonna wash away all your sins.
And if you still can't see the light,
God's gonna buy you a satellite.

Look to the heavens and see it shine,
Heal the sick and lead the blinds.
Tune it in and hear it say,
It's counting down to judgement day.

So jump in the river and learn to swim,
God's gonna wash away all your sins.
And if you still can't see the light,
God's gonna buy you a satellite.

Hey satellite man, your time has come,
Your word received by everyone.
And should you fall, well, that's okay,
You love the ones that you betray.

So jump in the river and learn to swim,
God's gonna wash away all your sins.
And when at last you see the light,
God's gonna buy you a satellite.

So jump in the river and learn to swim,
God's gonna wash away all your sins.
And when at last you see the light,
God's gonna buy you a satellite.

God's gonna buy you a satellite!
Look to the heavens and see it shine.

What's that? One of the Hippy hymns you guys sang at Woodstock while sitting in a big circle knitting socks?
No that's what I was whispering into your mother's ear the night you were conceived..through a bedsheet!

Yeah? Well your momma is so....

Ah hell, who am I kidding, I haven't stooped to momma jokes since seventh grade I can't suddenly get that desparate now.

I would never donate my money to a church.

I would, however, donate money to build weapons that destroy my enemies.

In other words, I'm not paying to build a church, but I would pay to build a cruise missile. God, if he exists, wouldn't need cash.

our church leaves a basket at the back of the church for people to voluntarily go drop their donations off into... every once in awhile, during announcements, we tell all the newcomers that there are envelopes in their bulletins, and if they feel led to give that there is basket at the back of the church.. and thats it..

God leads whom He leads how He wants to...

And the sign says "Everybody welcome, come in, kneel down and pray"
But then they passed around a plate at the end of it all
And I didn't have a penny to pay
So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own f#@%in' sign
I said, "Thank you Lord for thinking 'bout me, I'm alive and doing fine"

Some refrences:

De 14:22 - "You must set aside a tithe of your crops ? one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year.

De 14:23 - Bring this tithe to the place the LORD your God chooses for his name to be honored, and eat it there in his presence. This applies to your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and the firstborn males of your flocks and herds. The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to fear the LORD your God.

De 14:25 - If so, you may sell the tithe portion of your crops and herds and take the money to the place the LORD your God chooses.

De 14:28 - "At the end of every third year bring the tithe of all your crops and store it in the nearest town.

2Ch 31:5 - The people responded immediately and generously with the first of their crops and grain, new wine, olive oil, honey, and all the produce of their fields. They brought a tithe of all they owned.

Mt 23:23 - "How terrible it will be for you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest part of your income, but you ignore the important things of the law ? justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but you should not leave undone the more important things.

Lu 11:42 - "But how terrible it will be for you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest part of your income, but you completely forget about justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but you should not leave undone the more important things.

Heb 7:5 - Now the priests, who are descendants of Levi, are commanded in the law of Moses to collect a tithe from all the people, even though they are their own relatives.

My church has done a lot for me, both personally and spiritually. I like who they are and what they are doing so I have no problem supporting them. I give what I can. I also give a lot of my time to them. I agree there are corrupt churches out there. There are some also that do a lot of good.

I got a buddy of mine who's a baptist, almost makes six figures...and surpringly gives 10% to the church. He says you should give 10%.....or at least give till it hurts. God knows when its hurting you, he says.

He also says the weekly offerings do NOT count. You may or may not give weekly.
But he says tithing at 10% is a matter of obedience.
the Catholic church i go to preaches the same about tithing.

i don't. add more to my Catholic guilt.

I actually take about 10% of my income from the church. And I'm not even religious.

Churches can go fvck themselves. Asking for money from average middle and lower class people in order to build elaborate cathedrals and stadiums should be the sin, not refusing to give pay it.

Though per person that might be more economical than building enough $500,000 churches to hold the same number of worshipers.

But I hate Lakewood church, so whatever.

Mark 12:41-44

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.
42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.
43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.
44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything-- all she had to live on."
(NIV)

Great illustration about how giving a set amount is nothing more than legalistic, "religious" BS.

Very true. I wonder who would actually believe that he has any needs at all???

But churches (good ones) can use the money for charitable things.

churches strive to convert the rest of the non-christains because they feel as if their religion is the right one

of course this manages to rape culture and tradition in the process

Hahahahaha obedient to what? Some guy way back in the day who said "holy crap, I know how we can keep the church aloft, tell these jerks to give us their money, no no, wait, tell them GOD said to give us their money, yeah, thats it, and he was VERY specific to, 10%...."

I don't go to church, I don't believe in church (hahaha zing), I do believe in god, but I think a church is not the best idea (at least not anymore).

So I guess I shoulda just clicked "no" huh. :)
