Then why are the two continents in the western hemisphere named "North America" and "South America", and not "North Canada" and "South Canada"?

There is no country called "America".

America refers to the western hemisphere.

Maybe the 'best country in the world' should ask itself why it chose to name itself after a feminine version of a Latinized Italian name instead of making up some sweat sounding word like Canada ;).

sub ed. Clearly by 'Made up' I mean misheard another word. Go Canada!, the only country in the world (I have no source for that) to be named after the misheard word for Town!

There is no country called "America".

America refers to the western hemisphere.

And the USA's complete and total domination of it!

We tell the rest of the world to call these two continents and we say "They are the Americas".

Mexico? 'Merica!
Brazil? 'Merica!
Peru? 'Merica!
Candians? 'Fuck'em
Nicaragua? 'Merica!
Costa Rica? 'Merica!
Caribbean? 'Merica!
Antartica? 'wait, what?
