i think its sad most people spend a boat load of money on vitamin pills that they probably dont need.

person sees a commercial for Riboflavin and says i should take that. i have no idea what it is or if i have a deficiency but hell i want to be healthy so im going to go buy some.

"dietary supplements" is COMPLETELY VAGUE and offers NO information or usefulness whatsoever.

Do multivitamins cause cancer?
Does fishoil cause cancer?
Do fat loss supplements cause cancer? (These, of all "dietary supplements" are hands down the most risky)
I take a caffeine pill for a dietary supplement, does that cause cancer?
The problem is that is is completely non-regulated, so you don't really know what is in the pills. You may THINK you are taking a caffeine pill because the label said it had caffeine, but you may be taking a multivitamin with some caffeine instead. And vise-versa.

A recent study showed that herbal suppliments were basically flat out lying about what was in them. That same would likely apply to any non-regulated suppliment.

We don't need stong government interfering regulations. We simply need them to be tested routinely and prove that they contain what they say they contain. But no, that is too much government intrusion. Will someone please think of the children's trust funds of the company owners?

describes research showing that over-the-counter supplements may actually increase cancer risk if taken in excess of the recommended dietary amount.
Your ability to be pedantic is wonderful. I especially like the use of red text. However, your awareness of the world is slightly lacking.

Though, if you wish to continue to be pedantic, I suppose in the first case, people could take a fraction of a "one a day" tablet, instead of ingesting a whole tablet at a time as intended. And, in the case of the one-a-day prenatal tablets in the second image, I suppose the mother could be a raging alcoholic whose entire diet consists of vodka and her one-a-day tablet. Because if she eats any food with any nutritional value at all, 100% + any percent greater than 0 exceeds the recommended dietary amount.

Meh, I've stopped caring about any of these studies or warnings. I just expect to get cancer from something and it does not really matter at this point.

I keep trying that argument on my wife. Since we already eat, we already are getting above 0% of nutrients. Thus, anything with 100% of a nutrient is too much. So far, I have never persuaded her on that argument. Daily vitamins should be far closer to 25%. That way, you get the nutrient if your diet lacks it for some reason, but you aren't likely to overdose.

Both sides can find things to quote here from the article.

“This is not to say that people need to be afraid of taking vitamins and minerals,” says Byers. “If taken at the correct dosage, multivitamins can be good for you. But there is no substitute for good, nutritional food.”Byers says that people can get the daily recommended doses of vitamins and minerals in their diets by eating healthy meal and that many adults who take vitamin supplements may not need them.
“At the end of the day we have discovered that taking extra vitamins and minerals do more harm than good,” says Byers.

And it is called Proposition 65, or Prop 65 for short.

... Any vitamins not used is simply pissed out.

Take 10 multivitamins and watch your piss turn dark yellow and paint with it.

It's nothing dangerous to take excessive vitamin supplementation.

Depends on the vitamins; water soluble ones are the ones you are talking about, but fat soluble vitamins (A/D/E) stay with you longer and you are able to overuse them quite easily.

At least that is what I learned in school. :D

Make your kidneys work harder and still expect them to work for a lifetime. Good plan!

What does California have to do with it (other than the gratuitous jab)?

Because they are the only state making those obnoxious labels on everything.

"This product contains certain chemicals and/or compounds known to The State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, madness, social awkwardness, improved eyesight, and incontinence. Good luck."

Is coffee a nutritional supplement? Because it's about the only one I take and california already has signs in coffee shops warning you about coffee cancer.

The supplements industry has very deep pockets. They'll put up a good fight, probably with some 'freedom' ads and bribing lobbying.

Some product labels warn of things known to the state of California to cause cancer.

Ya those stinking commies and their labeling of products!

We dont need no stinking labels unless its an american flag.

Y'know... this might be a million dollar idea. "Freedom pills." Under the ingredients, just put a flag.

Oh and one warning: may be poisonous to commies.

The facility I'm at now for a conference has one of these stupid signs at the entrance to the parking garage. Totally ambiguous meaning. What the hell does 'this structure contains chemicals that a are known to California to cause cancer and birth defects' mean? I should lick the asphalt? I should live in the garage? Etc...

Pretty much every public building in California has those now, just to be on the safe side.

So much scientific advancement...

Really? Humanity has spent more energy praying to imaginary beings, coming up with imaginary scenarios to entertain each other, and devising and using some very real (as far as we know reality to be) ways of killing each other over mostly questionable reasons. But go ahead make your case for this "much scientific advancement" of which you note.

Yes there has been some scientific advancement, by a very small minority of the population.

Only the water soluble ones....things like vitamin C are damn hard to OD on, but things like Vitamin A? Much easier to OD on and can actually get to toxic levels. Fat-soluble vitamins tend to bioaccumulate and can be hard to get rid of.

It's funny really. People are so ignorant of science and susceptible to pretty packaging that many will ignore this study or those like it (there are) and keep taking their supplements. many will "swear" that they feel better now that they take a multi vitamin as well.

It's really completely indubitable now that unless you're treating a specific condition you've received professional guidance about you shouldn't be trying to take a supplement. At best probably you are wasting your money; at worse causing harm.

The rationale for this is the supplements themselves are not regulated by the FDA and therefore have no exact quality control, there may be impurities in the pills themselves that increase the cancer risk.
Nobody quite knows what the rationale is. There's absolutely no reason to think that if a little vitamin is good more is better, so this is almost certainly not just because of "impurities" due to lack of proper regulation.

Completely wrong. Please don't post about vitamins again without researching further.
