I lived there for 5 years and went to Savannah College of Art and Design. We had to come up with a metaphor for Savannah in my speech class. Mine was, "Savannah is like a prostitute that goes ballroom dancing on the weekends." You see, the town is pretty much a slum stuck in the 1950s in terms of politics and people. Most of the locals have a great sense of entitlement, and tend not to be very helpful as employees. But on the weekends, the town flips it's coin and becomes this robust tourist town that shines and has a great atmosphere.
I've always said that Savannah is a great place to visit, but a terrible place to live.
That said, depending on what you're looking for, and what you're looking to do I can recommend a lot of things to do there.
You'll want to check out river street, Tubby's Tank house is decent food, not fantastic, but that's river street. City Market is nice to walk through, you can do both river street and city market easily in about 6-8 hours. (If you're taking your gf, or wife tell them not to wear heels).
Food:
For good mexican: Jalapenos
For good sushi: Wasabi's
For good fine dining (fish, local): Elizabeths
For good overall: Billy's Place (above McDonough’s)
Avoid, Lady & Sons (sub par to KFC), and the Crab Shack (no longer serves local seafood), both are disgusting and way over priced.
Entertainment:
Karaoke: McDonough’s (has really good Karaoke (the people are good), it's a staple for Savannah)
Bar: Savannah Smiles (Dueling Piano Bar)
