A girl at work could not get her modem to work.. at all. A mutual freind of ours (who works there also) who has an inflated notion of her abilities ( to the point that one time a while ago she told me that I knew NOTHING compared to her!!!) tried for FIVE HOURS to get it working. She was messin around in dos, reformatted the HDD, you name it. She came to the conclusion that either the modem or motherboard HAD to be bad. I told my freind that I would stop by and give it a shot. I went into Device manager and sure enough, there was the exclamation point next to "PCI Communication Device". I highlighted it, Properties and it said the drivers were not installed or not working, blah blah... I told it to browse the CD to where the drivers were located. Nothing, it said they "could not be found." Hmmm.. I ejected the CD and turned it over. YUP, smudges and scratches. I wiped it off and tried again. Viola!!! took about 10 minutes. ROFL!!! Just wait till I get to work tommorrow!!! Gonna HAVE to rub that in!!! LOL!!!

some people don't know a lot about computers, just as many of us don't know anything about building a house nor fixing a car..

LOL! Great story KDOG! :D I love those, "I'm better than you!" 5 hours of trying later...nothing doing..."can't be me!" Then the "you" goes in, 10 minutes..."all fixed, enjoy! :D"

Hehehehehe. :)

Make sure that you rub this in every chance you get. Deflating someones ego is one of the greatest things in life :)

Duckers - Amen to that, brother!!
I have even heard rumors about people who have happy, productive lives and have never even overclocked a Celeron!! :D

it happens.

it is improbable that most people can think of most of the things that could've caused the problem.

i am hoping you told them not to touch the bottom of the CD.

I thought you were going to tell me that YOU called ME on a service call and I was a resounding success in helping YOU solve a problem. ;)

Mislead by a subject line, once again.

JonnyGURU, I almost cringe now when I do have to call for tech support. I keep thinking, 'oh great, I have forgotten something really stupid and now I will be the subject of the newest rant" The pressure is killing me.... ;)

I have learned too many times that sometimes its the little things that realy get you ;)

A good friend of mine called me up to ask me to help him fix his car. It seems that he had given it a tune up and it started once but soon died after. He said he tried everything and after a few hours of frustration he kicked the door of his car and put a dent in it.

I showed up with a few tools expecting the worst. After checking several things under the hood I attemped to start the car. I then told him that I had to run home to pick up my Vacume guage. As I was driving home I called him to ask him to check and see if there was any gas in the car ;) I learned a few new words that day and learned to always check the gas guage before working on a car:)

Naw Ratkil, that's not so.

I've built up this reputation of being "cruel and unusual" to those who don't know so much, but I often tell people of a story of how >> I << screwed up or how often I see the particular mistake made so the person feels better about making "simple" mistakes.

You'll only get ranted about if you

 • Insist I am wrong
 • Insist you are the PC GOD (which doesn't explain why you are calling me) and
 • Insist that it is OK to mishandle electronics by shipping them in envelopes

;)

yeah, the fact that I even have to call at all, usually humbles me well beyond the point of trying to impress anyone with my knowledge. :)
