Because when they first were used, it was as a security screw to make sure the average Joe couldnt open up their electronic device, messing it up, put it all back together, and say "I dont know what happened, I plugged it it and it went poof, and quit."

Now that it is main stream, your forced into having more. You should try being me, I work on electronics, and have about 50+ with about 20 more on the way because they started using a different screw for the Wii, DS, and GC different bits to open all the units you cant just go to the hardware store and buy off the shelf.

MS thought they be smart and use a torx with a nub in the middle of the screw head for all the 360 controllers, all you got to do to open them it use a jewelers flat head and bust the nub out and a regular torx works just fine then, and though I had the right bit, I didnt feel like digging for it. Im sure the companies that make screws dont mind coming up with different ones so they can sell the patent to makers of hand held tools to make to tool to get them out.

Torx is indeed awesome. It's too bad that it's more expensive and the bits aren't as common.

Sears craftsman.

They will replace them even if you break them doing something you shouldn't. Like using them to pry something.

Or using a flathead as a chisel.

they replaced a regular red/clear screwdriver with a red/black rubber grip 'professional' version.

I picked up some nice Kobalt sets from Lowes for 10 bucks. Actually seemed pretty good for the price. They may still have that deal going on.

They're not super nice like craftsman or snap-on, but it's pretty good.

I've heard good things about Robertson screws.

I can't believe an American has heard of Robertson!

Not as good as torx for truly high torque applications, but much better than Philips for your standard-duty stuff.

PS@OP The real question is 'why does hex still exist when there's torx, and torx bits can move existing hex screws and bolts?'.

Kobalt should be fine for light duty usage, but you are better off getting a Picquic if you want a multi bit. I have torque most aluminum shank screwdrivers out of shape and that include Klein tools 10 in 1 & 5 in 1 screw drivers.

IMHO, almost all single shank with hardening tip screwdriver set is way better than any multi bit that you can get. My personal favorite is Wera insulated screwdrivers.

Hex is not as good as Torx, but you have to live with it because many parts still use hex, and the worst has to be flat head.

I hate Torx. I actually hate all internal types. They work beautifully when used in environments that never get dirty, but they're a b*tch to clean out on a car when you're working on it. Give me a good old hex-head bolt any day.

Or putting a three foot pipe on a 1/4 inch drive ratchet and applying about about 50 pounds of force to the end of the pipe...

(Hey, the 1/2 and 3/8 drive ratchets were too thick to fit into the space... What?...) ;)
