I know I've wanted to do something like this, and I'm sure there are a lot of people who deserve it, but it's a dumb thing to do. That cell phone user can end up pressing charges, you're likely going to face assault charges, not to mention they can easily sue you for damaging the cell phone (which can easily set you back $700). if you end up having to hire a lawyer and all that jazz, you're looking at thousands in expenses.....

He was far too easy on her.

Cell phones seem to be a bad-behavior amplifier. Every damn day I have to dodge some tool on the sidewalk who's more engrossed in their phone than where the heck they're walking, and they clearly can't do both at the same time.

The guy was so fed up that he was willing to spend a night in jail.

Even worse when someone's driving.

He was in the wrong, at least legally. It's an extremely rude thing the woman was doing, but being rude doesn't give somebody else the right to damage your property.

They were both in the wrong morally, him for the aforementioned reason, and her for being rude.

EDIT: This post is not a response to the above post. He certainly could [IMO rightfully] press assault charges, assuming the slap wasn't in self-defense.

EDIT 2: Now that I think about it, not sure that the woman couldn't be considered to be engaged in some kind of harassment.

No jury would convict him

I'm siding with him on this one. What kind of person does it take to go somewhere where something is clearly prohibited and do that thing anyway? It's more than just that particular thing I'm angry about, it's the attitude of the person that I hate so much. They want to partake in everything, but they want to give up nothing for it. It's a childish mentality, because only children should be that inconsiderate of the other people around them. Only children should be so self centered as to be incapable of relinquishing a minor thing like the use of a cell-phone for a couple of hours. Adults are only adults because they have learned to delay gratification when they have to.

thats up there with going to a baseball or hockey game and you have 3-4 bitches seated right behind you having a non-stop clucking social hour the entire fucking game! or you get the same 3-4 bitches who for some dumb ass reason think is cool to bring 3-4 year olds to said game and all they do is coddle the little snots while they run up and down the stairs or kick the back of your seat...

it wasnt even a movie, it was a stage play!!!

The stellar production—a swinging cabaret-type musical adaptation loosely adapted from Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace—takes place inside a luxuriant carnival tent nestled next to the Standard High Line. The audience is closely clustered at small tables throughout the room, and while there is food and beverage service before the show and during intermission, the performance itself takes place with zero table service interruptions, and the atmosphere is as quiet and attentive as any other conventional stage play. At least it's supposed to be.

that makes it even worse to have your phone go off imo. she's a doof. i'd have given him a standing ovation for his performance.

Back in the day, theatres used to have ushers who would kick out unruly patrons. I don't know why they did away with that, because they're needed more than ever. Boggles my mind that someone would pay $10-$15 to see a movie then spend the whole night on the phone.

Also a good reason to revive drive ins. If you want to be a asshole, go nuts. They're confined to their own car/minivan so they can't bother other patrons.

Because society, or in this case the service industry has slowly transitioned into catering to the customer's every need, no matter how ridiculous it may be. The theaters don't have ushers next to the ailes kicking people out anymore because they don't wanna get sued by dumb people who hire asshole lawyers to file lawsuits against them for stupid shit like the one in the OP.

Did you know if you go to a chain restaurant, you can come out with a free meal every single time because by the end of the meal, you can tell the wait staff you didn't like your food, and you can just walk out without any issue. The GM is instructed to comp your entire table if there's any complaints. The wait staff of the table will get written up, and after a few times will get fired. The customer is always right mentality is the very reason why we have completely unreasonable customers who think the world owes them. Guess what, if you don't pay up for service tendered at my shop, I'm pulling my gun out and hold you until the police comes over to arrest your ass for theft.

If she actually slapped him like that, the reason she didn't go with charges is she'd be getting the worse in the end.

I dont think any part of your thread title is accurate...

play, not movie.
threw phone at a curtain, not smashed.
left on his own accord despite them trying to detain him, not tossed out.
