Hernias suck

I got a hernia about 5 years ago. I think I have another one, but it doesn't hurt. Everyonce in a while it comes about, but recently it's gotten further than usual. Should I go see a doctor? I really don't want to have surgery during summer school...

If it is something serious, the longer you wait the worse off you will be in the end. My dad always waits till the last possible moment and it has never done him any good. Go see doctor, before 10 other ATOTers will tell you to do the same.

The sooner you go, the better. Honestly, this is probably a routine surgery for them and nothing to worry about. Your teachers should be willing to understand a situation like this incase you need to make arrangements for a test or something.

Depends how big it is, and if you can push it back in. A smaller hernia is more dangerous because there's a higher risk of strangulation (your intestines getting stuck in the hernia and their blood supply getting cut off). I'd say go to a doctor for a consult. I can totally understand your reluctance to have surgery though, I just had my gallbladder out on Friday and I'm a little miserable...plus I'm trying to study for boards. So good luck to you, and I hope its something that can wait til a more convenient time!

the less damage, the easier the fix, and less chance of it becoming a residual problem. take care of it now!

The father of a guy I knew in high school actually died from hernia surgery. He somehow ended up with 10-15 blood clots throughout his lungs, heart, and legs.

I thought I had a hernia once...and I guess i still do. I went to the doctor and she said it would be worse doing surgery ruining a bunch of good tissue if it isn't hurting all the time. They said if it gets worse to go back and get it done.

I'm going to contact the campus doctor and see what I can do.

The first time I had a hernia, I was out playing kickball and it all of the sudden happened. It hurt pretty bad. Surgery wasn't too bad, but I was young and it was my first time. The first part was the anesthesia, made me feel like crap for two days.

When I had my first one, they gave me the option of doing the other side. Should of did it then...

Yah, I've had a "hernia" for many years, but it's always been slight and has never hurt.

It kind of feels weird now, but it's probably a mental thing. I'd rather get it done now and now worry about it rather than waiting till I'm 50.

I had one repaired 5 years ago almost to the day. I was down for about 2 days, that was it. Instant relief from the uncomfortable feeling and stress of knowing it was there. No issues to this day. I hit the gym again (overcame the laziness) 10 months ago and for the last 2 months I've been concentrating on Olympic style lifts (deads, squats, barbell rows, etc) and things are still fine. I think I believe the Doc when he said the repair will hold better than before the injury.

Go to a doctor. Like someone else said, you risk strangulation of your intestine, which could be deadly and would lead to emergency surgery.

You already had one fixed, so you know that the surgery really isn't too bad. Usually just really painful the first few days and then you're good.

Same here, I have a minor hernia and the doc told me that unless it starts to get worse there really isn't any point in having surgery. They're not that uncommon really...
