Here's some info on Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro.. But MHZ = ?

First of all, as of today (Sept 1, 2002), NewEgg.com still has the wrong pictures for the Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro videocard. The pictures they show are for the retail ATI board. So here is some info on the Sapphire:

Product Page - manufacturer
Pictures - manufacturer

No info regarding clock frequency 🙁

But look at how small the GPU/VPU heatsink is! It doesn't even cover the GPU completely. ATI's heatsink looks much bigger.. Something to consider when overclocking.

If anyone knows core/memory frequencies, please post!

That reminds me of the Gigabite Radeon 9700 they reviewed on Anands. It probably just spins much faster like the Gigabyte which is another reason to go with the ATI version. I hate loud parts.

I don't even care how fast it spins. I just need the heatsink to be large enough for me to mount a Panaflo 80 mm fan on it (like I did with the GF4-4400). But it's still incredibly stupid for them to make a heatsink that doesn't even cover the GPU!

someone at rage3d contacted sapphire and its has the same mhz speed on core and memory as the retail radeon.

fan looks like crap though 🙁

Which is better OEM or retail? Guessing Retail because you get the 3 year warranty and all the extras. Plus i here the retail overclocks better but i could be wrong on that.

BOTH Radeon 9000's looked bad? I thought that with the RAMDAC built right in this wouldn't happen.... 🙁 Can't wait to review one myself....

it looks like sapphire makes 2 different 9700 PRO.

It looks like they make one with there custom fan and then they make one that looks identicle to the ATI one..

Thats why they have 2 model numbers on this page i bet. sapphire

or i could be totally wrong 🙂

Can anybody make out the ram markings in that picture. It looks like samsung but I cant tell which BGA chips it is.

Ah, I didn't even pay any attention to that! They indeed have 2 different product models listed there. In which case, maybe NewEgg does have the correct pics, although they are pixel per pixel identical 😉

Who gives a rats ass if the cooler don't cover the GPU does it make contact with the whole GPU NO! God i can't believe some people can be some damn stupid. I swear some people would bitch if the damn thing was covered in one giant ass heatsink with a 120mm fan sittin' on both sides...

Yeah, you guys must not realize that the whole GPU does not have to be cooled. Just the core...much like a CPU only has the core in contact with the HS/fan unit.

Either way, sticking with the Real Deal ATI cards are your best bet. I dont see the point in risking any added human error by going with a re-manufactured part.

I see the doctor's office let out early? Here, take this. Rub twice a day into the "I am so damn mad" area of your head.

Maybe you don't understand that a larger and better designed cooling solution allows for better overclocking and greater stability at the overclocked frequencies? Maybe you have no idea that a larger fan can spin much slower and quieter than a small fan, and still provide much better cooling? Why don't you take the heatsink from your CPU, and trim it on all sides? Make it into a little cube with 6-8 pins, and see how well that cools your computer.

P.S. I heard that sex helps relieve stress.

But it's still incredibly stupid for them to make a heatsink that doesn't even cover the GPU!

Why is it stupid? (honest question, not rhetorical)

It seems to me that as long as it covers the entire *die* then that's all you need... you're not going to get any more heat transfer from the ceramic portion of the chip
