"President Bush has a better chance of eliminating terrorism in every corner of the world than of putting an end to performance-enhancing drugs in sports...The players won't agree to anything more than the barest minimum of testing and punishment for offenders."

Cook: Bush's anti-steroids plea falling on deaf ears

Looks like Mr. Cook misunderestimated the President. His effective use of the bully pulpit led to a new steroid agreement in MLB.

"The negotiations for a new drug testing policy have been going on since May, after President Bush appealed to athletes and pro sports leagues to wipe out the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs in his State of the Union speech nearly a year ago.

Selig thanked the president for bringing national attention to the issue, as well as congressional leaders who made performance enhancing substances a priority."

But the talks lagged until December when The San Francisco Chronicle published leaked grand jury testimony in which two of baseball's biggest stars - the Giants' Barry Bonds and the Yankees' Jason Giambi - admitted that they had used steroids.

For years, I've been content in knowing that some day I'd be able to look all the fanbois in the face and say "I told you so."

"I told you so."

Drug abuse is a big problem in this country. to the president for taking a stand even though he likely knew that he would be mocked and derided by the likes of Mr. Cook in the press:

"But once you get past Bush's grandstanding and his pathetic attempt to get votes...it's clear there won't be an end to performance-enhancing drugs in his lifetime or his twin daughters' lifetime or his grandchildren's lifetime. - Ron Cook

DON'T BACKTALK OUR SAVIOR.

Rip's Fantasy World Take: OMGWTFTEHCHIMPRULEZ!

The reality: Bush goes for the cheap score by courageously coming out against steroids in his state of the union speech in January. He also comes out against "really bad things" and forthrightly for Mom and apple cake. Aides whisper furiously in his ear. Bush's face brightens, and he corrects himself, "I am for cherry pie, and cannot tell a lie, like Benjamin Franklin when he admitted cutting down the apple tree." He somehow mispronounces "tree".

On the baseball steroids front, nothing much happens.

Sen. John McCain threatens baseball with legislation if they don't do something. Months and months later, all sides in baseball bring forth this:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- With stars like Barry Bonds under suspicion and lawmakers demanding action, Major League Baseball adopted a tougher steroid-testing program that will suspend first-time offenders for 10 days and randomly test players year-round.[. . .]

The agreement was hailed by baseball management and its union Thursday as a huge step forward but was criticized by some as not going far enough because the penalties are less harsh than those in Olympic sports and amphetamines were not banned.[. . .]

McCain, who had threatened baseball with legislation, said that is no longer necessary, though he would have preferred a 10- to 15-game suspension for a first offense and a permanent ban for multiple positive tests.[. . .]

"I would have liked to see amphetamines added to this list," McCain said.
[. . .]

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson commended players and owners.[. . .]

Still, it wasn't good enough for World Anti-Doping Agency chairman Dick Pound, a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1978.

"Basically, instead of having to hold up the liquor store five times before you get a one-year suspension, you only have to hold it up four times," he said. "But at least there's some penalty incurred the first time that you're tested, and that's a step forward."[. . .]

WADA's Dr. Gary Wadler called the new policy "somewhat disingenuous" and "a Band-Aid."

As in the previous deal, a player who tests positive will be targeted for more tests along with those who within the previous 12 months give a joint management-union panel reason to determine there is "reasonable cause."[. . .]

Wadler specifically criticized the failure to address amphetamines, which many in baseball consider to be a far greater problem than steroids.

"Amphetamines, better known as 'greenies,' have a long tradition in baseball," Wadler said. "For them not to ban it raises questions."
Mission Accomplished!

Whatever . . . Selig credited Bush Boy and the tools in Congress so they would go away.

The reforms basically makes an anemic drug(steroid) policy a little less anemic. The policy bans hGH (growth hormone) but testing is likely to be minimal. It probably bans insulin but it's unlikely they will test for it (requires a blood sample). It won't test for IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor), although it's arguably one of the most potent non-steroidal anabolics available. They will test for THG but that's "old". There's better stuff already in the pipeline. They will test for old reliables like nandrolone and boldenone but only morons would take drugs with such long half-lives. But you could easily get away with short-cycle water soluble steroids. Unfortunately, the oral versions that tend to have shorter half-lives are the most liver toxic (Dianabol/Winstrol). So instead of making sport safer (and more fair) this plan could very well make it less safe. High level players will always have access to performance enhancing drugs. Baseball has had stimulants since the Babe.

But since Bush won't take credit for Messopotamia, Crapganistan, Mt.Debt, the evisceration of the US military, or destroying a great nation's standing in the world . . . congratulations for a legacy contribution.

why the hell is the use of steroids a big deal to begin with? do you feel duped cause your [insert favorite home run hitter] didn't do it all by himself? i personally think the whole deal is stupid no matter who is doing the say so, had it be clinton or bush. drugs are a personal choice, and the war on drugs is a war on personal freedom.

Because teenage boys idolize pro sports heros and the steroid use has trickled down to HS age sports.

The % of kids that play HS sports & goe into the pros is miniscule & they'll use every advantage possible to get into pro sports or get on a college team.

By cutting down on steroid use in pro sports, it levels the playing field and hopefully makes it less of a necessity for teens to even consider steroid use to enhance their performance.

I never made the mistake of underestimating GWB, and that was one thing many did. Presidents who have distructive tendencies as he has are always dangerous.
