Here's one reason I don't send my kids to public schools

Not all schools are overcrowded and violent. There are good public schools out there, they just seem to be disappearing fast.

Yup. Public schools are terrible. That's why I had PhD's teaching me English Lit during my Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years at a public HS. That's also why my Junior and Senior year calculus teachers were also professors at the local college. And it's probably also why my Government teacher was on a first-name basis with our state senators and representatives. Must also have been why my Chemistry and History teachers were more knowledgeable than the college professors I've had.

Seems like good schools are in the suburbs or the country. Probably the best being suburbs as they have the most money.

funny, considering my public high school produced 6 national merit scholars the year i graduated, and nearby private schools produced none. we also had far better results on AP tests and were accepted to more prestigious colleges.

My high school was more overcrowded than that. Seriously, you aren't doing your kids some grand favor by keeping them out of public school. If anything you are sheltering them.

lol they think that staircase is crowded.

come to my school

I don't agree at all. Public schools vary on where you live. Generally the richer parts of an area will have great public schools, and city schools are not that good. My hometown of Chicago has 6 "magnet" schools which buck that trend, aka they are public schools kids need to apply to get into and they have excellent teachers/facilities in a public school environment.

Also, don't blame the schools, blame poor social spending by the US. If there aren't enough teachers, books, or facilities that is one reason schools will be bad. Also, if Social Economic Status is low, well that is the best predictor anyways about how good a school is. So yea, if you have a school with high SES, then its gonna be a good school, public or private.

Don't get me wrong, I went to private schools, but I don't feel they are a necessity.

Public schools prepare you for the harsh reality known as life.

Yup, wouldn't want my kids to miss all this fun and have them grow up naive.

?There?s been a huge jump in harassment,? Van Orden said, listing the categories of offenses in order of frequency, ?then theft, trespassing, fighting... . Last year at this period, we hadn?t confiscated weapons. This year, there have been seven. Today (Friday) was the first day (this week) we didn?t get anything.?

Van Orden and his partner, Officer Bill Mahoney, have found knives, from box-cutters to a dagger, and one stun gun; and they only began scanning students for weapons Monday.

Even with that added precaution, though, Edison teachers, students and administrators spoke of a feeling of being on the verge of disaster: Someone, they said, is going to get hurt.

?It?s our belief that something is going to happen in the building before the year is over,? Haldeman said. ?That?s the general belief. And then it?ll be too late.?

Agreed. You will be exposed to a lot more variety of clubs, sports, and various other academic stuff (debate, av club, tech academy, ev composition) in a public highschool. You will also be exposed to a more diversified atmosphere in a public school. And anyways, theres a lot more boys/girls in a public school than a private one.

My view of private schools may be skewed as well - I had a few bible-thumping teachers that glorified everything the church did in recent history. I won't even get into my views of morning/afternoon prayer - where even Jewish students had to pray to god with Christain prayer

Then don't send them to Edison Tech. I could just as easily say I'm gonna keep my kids from growing up in New York because of idiots like you, but then you don't represent the entire state, do you? There's plenty of good public schools in NY, get a decent job so you can live somewhere good where your kids won't have to be scared about going to school every day.

They have their own fair share of problems. For example, Plano HS, in Plano (suburb of Dallas) Texas, has/had some of the highest incidents of heroin abuse in the recent years.

My school was an exemplary school outside of Houston, TX, yet it was NOTHING compared to a private school such as St. John's in Houston.

I go to an excellent public school. It all depends on where you live...if you live in the middle of a big poverty ridden city, you're going to get shafted on public schools. However, if you live in an affluent suburb the school may be outstanding.

Don't you think you need a PhD to teach HS English. Sounds like a waste to me.

Academics are only one part of the equation. What about the moral and social elements? They seem to be lacking at a lot of the affluent suburban schools.

I've heard strories about kids at my local public HS being ridiculed for bringing thier gym shoes to school in a Wal-mart bag.

No matter how good the academics were I would not put my kids in this kind of environment.

kids have been ridiculed ever since 4000 BC...making fun of people is all part of being a kid...

I diagree. The suburban schools (public and private) in my area are lilly white.

I send my kids to a city Catholic school where 30 - 40% of the students are Black, Hispanic, or mixed race.

Interestingly, out of 350 students there's only 1 Asian student and he has white parents.

My public school was great. Compared to the private schools in the area we averaged higher on standardized tests and had far better teachers. This was partially because the private schools paid crap, in New York public school teachers are taken care of fairly well as compared to other states.. Every teacher I had my senior year was genuinely interested in my success. While I did have to deal with a few that were not so student minded other years they were the exception, not the rule.

Not in my house. I have zero tolerance for this kind of nonsense.

I have a colleague who was ridiculed as a kid. Consequently, he and wife are childless largely because he didn't want his kids to face the same kind of ridicule he did.

Very sad.

If you want to spend your money on private school then go ahead. Kids who don't want to learn or study will mess up no matter
where you put them.

I'd rather save the money for college then send them to crappy private schools.
