Here's my setup: can someone tell me if it will work?

hello all,

i've managed to wire some CAT5e cords through my wall successfully. I wired from my room, up the wall, to the attic, back down the wall, to my brothers room. here's how it looks:

from my room theres a jack wired in the 568A standard. in my brothers room theres another jack wired with 568b. this is the same cable so the jacks are connected directly, just 568A on one side and B on the other. if i want us to be able to share files/game/etc, could I just plug each of our NICs into each of the jacks via a premade crossover cable?

Yeah. should work fine, as long as there are no splices in the cable and it's less than 100 meters (~328 ft (or shorter, if it's stranded cable)).

thanks, will seeing green lights on the NICs tell me that the jacks are wired properly? currently I see none, so I think my problem is that i didnt wire the jacks right...

would this be the case??

green lights are a plus.
Lots of places to go wrong here. wrong color in the wrong spot, kinked or broken wire, bad patch cables.
 
got green lights, thats a good thing, i'm up and running, now just time to mount the jacks properly and clean up....

if one jack is wired 568a and the other 568b what you have is a crossover. So on both computers use a regular patch cable. You should get a link light then if the jacks are punced down right.
 
yes one jack is 568A and the other is 568B so it is a cross over,

but i do have a cross over cable going from each jack to each NIC....i believe a straight through patch cable would work in this situation, can someone back me up / correct me if i'm wrong??

You're right. The crossover occurs in the cable in the wall.

If you want to go straight through use a crossover cable on one side and a straight thru on the other. Just make sure you got your standards right.
 
To clarify...
You have a crossover in your wall.
If on both ends you are going directly from the jack to the computers, the patch cords would have to be the same (both either cross-overs, or straight throughs.)

If you eventually put a hub or switch in, things might get a little confusing. It is more common to use a straight through in the walls, and then a single cross-over to one PC if the PC's are directly connected to the walls.

yeah, the reason why I didn't throw a switch up there in the attic is 'cause there's no electricity up there 🙁 however, eventually I'll throw a switch in the basement, rewire my jacks to a straight thru setup and fix it up 🙂
