Okay so I have a project I should have thought about more before I said Yes. So here goes:

The plan was to install a car stereo so that it was hidden. So we planned to put the deck in the glove compartment which could be locked and the face of the deck on a custom bracket and enclosure hanging from the roof. So we made all the brackets and then it was time for the fun part. Soldering wires to the back of the deck connection and taking it up the the face and soldering it to there to provide the connection to make the unit think everything was plugged in like it should be. So solder and toil for hours to complete it. Once completed plug it in and see if it works.

Well heres the problem. The face does not work. Yet the wires test out good connection all the way and the stereo will play a cd. I thought maybe it isn't putting out anough voltage in the signal to travel the 4 1/2 ft to the face.

Any thoughts?

Addition:

The unit is a JVC KD-s590
See it here http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-uR5YxkBxH6m/ProdView.asp?s=0&cc=01&c=3&g=300&I=257KDS590+

Can't get the radio to work however it will play cd's if inserted, then after about 3 minutes it kicks the cd out. On the face (Display) one (1) button works and the power button does have a dim red light and depending on how you hold it it will get a little brighter or turn off, but the active display does not come on. I have yet to test if the face is getting any power, I'm going to try that tonight.

Any info about the manufacturer / model number of the stereo?

Does the face get power (measuring gnd to power line at the face)? Does the display work? Does the radio work? Do the buttons work? Is it completely dead?

More info, plz.

My best guess is that the signal is lost/dampened enough to not power the faceplate lcd.
Since these would be digital signals sent from the CD to the face any change in amplitude
will cause it to fail which is what is happening.

4 1/2 feet is a long distance. Especially for an amplitude dependant signal.
