Yeah, I agree. "ZOMG the originals on DVD are still edited because they made some insignificant changes!"

From wikipedia

Good lord, we've come to the point where Wikipedia is an authoritative source on ANYTHING?!?

I love it how people expect some random person on the internet to be their moral guidance. No one can decide for another if it is moral to do something. Personally, I'm very comfortable with d/ling the laserdisc rips off the net because I've paid for countless versions of the movies over the years, many many toys when I was growing up, and I'm generally pissed for I-III sucking so bad so if I want to d/l and watch that version then fvck it, I'm gonna do it. If Lucas doesn't like that then fvck him. Back to my point, if the OP is comfortable with pulling down the laserdisc version (or hell, even the dvd-rips of the recent versions) then that's up to the OP to decide.

I wouldn't fault you for that, because many people (myself included) bought the Special Edition DVD set ONLY because Lucas lied and said that the originals would NEVER be released on DVD.

I remember that too. He was very insistent about it.

He could have offered a refund or something. With Lord of the Rings, I think it worked that if you bought the extended versions, you got a $5 rebate, wherein you'd send them the proof of purchase from your regular version. Not the full DVD price, but at least an acknowledgement of, "Well hey, you gave us money already. Here's a little bit back."

In a related matter, George Lucas today announced that he is buying all rights to Laserdisc technology, and will prohibit sale of the players and media after December 31, 2006.

I had the laserdisc box set of the original trilogy with a hardback book, the quality of the discs themselves was terrible, they were already degrading back in 1997, goodness knows how watchable they are now. I remember there were a lot of laserdiscs with manufacturing defects, was a shame really as i liked collecting them, the star wars box was especially nice to look at, if not to play.
