Here's a question for ya (if it's even possible)

Ok, in anticipation of the router that I'll be getting soon (the SMC Barricade 4-port), I'm trying to plan out how we are going to network a bunch of computers together. Here's the equipment we have:

1 SMC Barricade 4-port Cable/DSL Router
1 LinkSys 10/100 Switch
6 Computers (4 with 1 NIC each, 2 with 2 NICs each)
2 DSL Modems

I don't know much about the router yet (like what kind of options it has, what they do, and how to configure it, but I'm hoping to figure that out when I get it)

Now here's the thing I'm wondering. Is it possible to have EVERYBODY networked together, but only have the DSL modem going to certain people? In this case, 1 person wants a DSL modem for themselves, and the other 5 want to share the other one. Possible?

I THINK it would be possible.

For the individual DSL connection, use one of the systems with two NICs. Run the cable from one of the NICs to the DSL modem, the other to the switch. Setup the NIC connected to the DSL modem on the correct subnet, mask and route for the ISP, and the other for the internal network.

The second DSL modem would run to the router, then the router to the same switch for serving up the other systems.

This is similar to the way I'm setup here. I have two completely different routes in my server on two different NICs. BUT, there are a couple of key differences: It's a single DSL connection, and the server is Linux.

I don't know if this is doable with two DSL lines, or with Windows.

YOu are correct -- he can do it like that. He might have to adjust something on his routing table, maybe put in a peristent static or two, but it is do-able.

There's a more simple way to do this. Just get two of the SMC routers - they are so cheap nowadays, there's no sense in trying to get exotic and avoid having two. Hook one up to each DSL connection. Plug each of the routers into your Linksys switch. Make one be .1 on your network and the other .2. (Ie, 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2) Setup the 5 computers sharing one DSL line to have their default gateway be .1 and the other guy's default gateway be .2. You're all on the same subnet inside, it's just that you use different default gateways.

Note - You can plug PC's into either of the routers or the switch - With them all connected you've got one flat IP network and it doesn't really matter who plugs into what.

The SMC also allows you to set up Access Control lists so you can block certain users/groups, etc from getting out or restricted to certain ports and so on.

.. And who says you have to pay for it - You're working on it for 6 people - Shouldn't they help pick up the tab?

Actually that's where I'm getting the router from =) But since I'm in Canada, prices are a little higher after taxes and shipping. The reason I'm paying is because they're only going to be using it temporarily at res, I'm going to be taking it home with me to use after.
