Here's a new one: Windows XP SP3 Slipstream Weirdness

So I'm redo'ing a PC for my uncle, and he gives me a homemade Windows XP w/ SP2 "restore" disk that the guy that originally built his PC gave him. I figure, before just using it, I'll slipstream SP3 onto it and save some time and do a cleaner build in the process.

So I follow Paul Thurrott's guide, everything appears to slipstream fine, the clean install goes fine. Right click and Properties on My Computer reports Service Pack 3.

I go to run Windows Update, download the couple of pre-patches to get it to work...all is normal.

Here's where I encounter the weirdness: Windows Update runs, and then gives me a screen where I can choose to install SP3 (meaning: Windows Update thinks I'm not running SP3), or, just go install updates.

Has anyone ran across this issue before????

haven't seen this but maybe the problem lies in the fact that you used a restore disc. It wasn't a regular copy of windows you slipstreamed into right?

Correct. And, unfortunately, his product key doesn't work with my slipstreamed Windows XP Pro SP3 disk I've got, which was produced using my original Windows XP Pro disk. That one I know works, and I used Paul's guide for that one too. So, I know the steps in the guide work...and I know my SP3 file is good because it's the same disk I used when I created mine.

Grrrr....I hate sh1t like this...

He probably has an OEM copy of XP Home or Pro. XP keys are dependent on what version of XP you have (retail or oem).

I would try redoing the slipstream once again. If that doesn't work install from the source and download the IT package of SP3.

Turns out, after posting and confirming on MS TechNet, that I was indeed using a Beta copy of SP3. That in itself is strange, because I specifically waited until it was official before downloading it.

Anyways, I downloaded the current SP3 that's out there, re-did the slipstream, and viola, it's all good now.
