Here's a dumb question

So I work remotely, they gave me a computer to use when I'm away from my studio, I normally don't use it that often since it's a pc laptop. I formatted it when I got it cause it had vista on it, bleck

Then I realize they had VPN and everything installed (you had to login to a domain to boot it up) when they gave it to me, so I guess they could keep track of what's installed/sites I visit - but now that it's formatted they've lost that ability to spy on the system since it's a fresh install of XP - I only connect to VPN through firefox occasionally, and they can't spy on the system like that I don't think (can someone confirm this?)

Should I get them to put the security software back on? They gave me permission to format it, but never mentioned the security/domain issue. I've never worked for a company that does this kind of thing, so some input would be grand

No I don't use the machine for anything illegal, only ATOT 😀

Leave it be. If they gave you permission to format the thing and didn't ask you to install that other crap, don't complicate your life.

Do you have written proof that they gave you this permission? Also, if you don`t have anything to hide, just tell them.

Emails yes, they even sent me a copy of XP

if they sent you approval to format and install XP without their software included in the install and no instructions to install afterward, id say they dont really care. but dont lose those emails, just in case it becomes an issue they feel like pressing later on. those are serious ammo against an employee they want to get rid of without any real reason.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking, potential ammo not that I'm on bad terms with anyone, I work really hard for them

Unless the browser-based VPN access still gives them access to my system/site records? I would think that's a pretty big security flaw if that's the case

I believe they could still track all the sites you visited while connected to VPN, since all the traffic would be flowing through their network.

Yes that would make sense, while connected, but I imagine they couldn't track what's installed on the machine or what I'm visiting when not connected to VPN.

Can anybody confirm this? Would they be only able to watch while it's connected to VPN? What about when it's not connected, I imagine not. I hope I don't get in shit for ATOT you jerks

whut?

Vista is god aweful. I absolutely abhor it. Flaming pile of garbage.

I can't count the number of times I've wanted to chuck my laptop out the window, and I can't wait to get around to installing XP.

I actually shrieked a little when I plugged in the new HD and the vista home screen popped up.

Vista + SP1 is f'n win. What is it you don't like? It's stable, quick, secure. It works.

Like most typical Vista-haters you don't have any specific issues, you just love being on that bandwagon.

For the purposes of getting some idea of a straight answer, yes, sure, that works.

It's more for the ability to put non standard apps on, ei itunes / whatever. I'm not sure how rigid they are with their software policies, but I'm guessing not very much so.

Hardly, it's just occasionally a little harder than normal to keep the idiots out of a thread & keep it on track without it being hijacked.

Quick?

That's a joke, right?

My 3 year old P4/1.73GHz laptop with 1gb of ram feels faster than this piece of garbage(C2D 1.83GHz, 2gb ram).

And I've turned all the stupid pretty stuff off! I just about shit myself when I first booted the computer up and it was using 1.2gb of ram and 20% processor power just sitting there doing nothing. Unacceptable.
