OK, technically a "prequel," but still a rip off of a long pre-existing movie.

(I disagree with their stupid title...but whatever)

Get Ready to Be Creeped Out for Five Seconds by the 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Ape

"Of all the reboots, prequels and origin stories going on in Hollywood franchises right now, there hasn't been as much talk about this August's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which takes place in modern-day San Francisco and sets into motion the simian revolution that knocks humanity off its perch as masters of Earth. When the original "Planet of the Apes" with Charlton Heston came out in 1968, one of the things that made it a classic (beyond its awesomely campy dialogue) was its cutting-edge ape makeup. Forty-three years later, the prequel has just unveiled a short clip of what the apes will look like this time. It's pretty lifelike -- and kinda creepy.

The apes will be all CGI for the new film, which is directed by relative unknown Rupert Wyatt (he previously did the British prison-break movie "The Escapist"). The effects work was done by director Peter Jackson's Weta Digital, which handled his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "King Kong," so they've got some experience making monkeys seem human. But they've topped themselves with this footage, although we do have to remind everyone that it's all of five seconds long.

What can you see in five seconds? Well, it's a simple shot of an ape who slowly moves his eyes to the right in a pretty natural, human way, underscored by some low, ominous music in the background. The impression this clip is supposed to make is pretty obvious: (1) Man, that monkey looks real; and (2) Uh oh, something bad is about ready to go down.

Andy Serkis (who did the motion-capture work for Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" films) will be playing Caesar, the main ape in this prequel, which also stars James Franco and Freida Pinto. The assumption is that this footage is of Caesar, but honestly we're just guessing. Regardless, it appears we won't have to worry about the apes in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." We should point out, though, that when Fox tried to do a "Planet of the Apes" remake 10 years ago with Mark Wahlberg, the ape costumes looked pretty impressive, too -- it was just everything else about that movie that was absolutely shoddy."

WTF? Isn't ANYONE in Hollywood capable of original thought?
Hmmm...maybe I should say...Isn't anyone in Hollywood capable of original INTELLIGENT thought?

Jeezus Hume Christ...it seems like at least 30% of the movies coming out every year are remakes of one kind or another...or a prequel/sequel to one that's already released.

FUCK...I've been waiting for decades for them to make Rendezvous With Rama...but instead, we get more simians...

(and as much as I like Morgan Freeman, he's not the right actor for the part in RwR...he's too fucking old to play the part)

you're 10 years too late

while I'm not looking forward to this movie at all, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to offer something interesting unlike the actual remake with Wahlberg 10 years ago, because this isn't a remake

I also find your desire for a film adaptation of Rendezvous With Rama to be hypocritical. If you truly desire originality, at least a prequel Planet of the Apes movie is more original than a film adaptation of an already existing story.

As long as it's nothing like that Tim Burton abomination I might not mind it.

Won't be the same without Roddy McDowall, though. :(

twice i clicked the play button on the link. Both times I got 4 seconds of a clip instead of 5. I feel cheated.

Why is no-one on the Internet capable of original or intelligent thought? These "OMG ANOTHER SEQUEL" complaints are really fucking boring and stupid.

:hmm:

If they make Rendezvous with Rama.... then it wouldn't be original.. because someone already wrote a book about it.

Rant Fail.

Burton's POS is the last movie that I've ever paid to see. I was so disappointed and shocked by what Hollywood assumed I would pay to see that I have yet to go back for more.

I believe that Hollywood as a whole has run out of original ideas. It has been about 100 years since the studios started making movies and they can only develop so much original content before they run out of (original) ideas. Case in point is Avatar. So many people went wild over the movie, mesmerized by eye-candy and special effects but those who stepped back and took a closer look saw just another regurgitation of an old idea.

No, the original ideas have run out ... but the money still flows. What does that say about the American public in general?

Trivia: anyone remember from the original what the first word spoken by an ape was?

You do realize that America isn't the only movie audience? The movies we see here are shown all over the world, and the big movies make almost as much money over seas as they do here.

I'm actually quite interested in this prequel.

I enjoyed the way the story was presented in the reboot of Planet of the Apes. And really, I'd love to see a film that finally looked at the main event of the Planet of the Apes plot, that never got much attention: how the hell did it all actually go down?
I want to see that. Now hopefully they do this movie right.

...anyway... I am glad Hollywood is at least leaving Conan the barbarian alone.

I assume you're being sarcastic...if not: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816462/

I'm a huge REH fan and enjoy his writings very much. I even enjoyed most of the later books by other authors and the two Arnold movies, each on their own merits. I'm not necessarily a Conan snob, so I'll watch the new movie coming out this year with an open mind, but my hopes aren't very high for it.

Yet, in spite of "Yet Another Sequel" in the title...you opted to click on it...and to reply.

OK, you got me there...but what movies are completely original in that respect? MOST are based on a book or novel...it's the constant recycling of one movie that gets tiresome.

It's one thing to make a movie...then several "sequels," but to continue to re-make movies from 30 years ago instead of finding new material shows a lack of originality.

What's next? Ah-Nold Schwarzenegger as "Luke Skywalker, Terminator!" ?

Ugh. The Planet of the Apes was a terrible idea, a terrible movie, and a terrible series of movies that followed.
