FAQ update list.
Here is my DVD-RW/-R/+RW/+R/-RAM FAQ.
For those of you who don't know, I bought the Panasonic LF-D311, which is a DVD-RAM/DVD-R combo drive. This drive suits my needs which are primarily data, and IMHO DVD-RAM is at this time best for data under both Windows and Mac OS. I use my drive like a Zip drive, with UDF 1.5 formatted discs cross-compatible under Win XP (with extra drivers) and Mac OS X for both reads and writes. (Windows XP does DVD-RAM read/write natively only with FAT32.)
However, most people are probably going to be more interested in either DVD-RW or DVD+RW. IMO it's 6 of one and a half dozen of the other. Right now DVD-R/-RW has the most widespread support, but the next versions of DVD+RW drives will have Mt. Rainier support. (Note that currently shipping DVD+RW drives do not support Mt. Rainier and may not be able to be updated to support it either.)
If you get a DVD-RAM drive, I'd advise getting one that supports 4.7 GB DVD-RAM and also supports DVD-R burning. The drives that also do DVD-RW aren't out yet, but they're coming.
If you get a DVD-RW drive, I'd advise getting one that burns DVD-R at 2X.
If you get a DVD+RW drive, I'd advise getting only a 2nd generation drive, because only these support DVD+R burning. 1st generation drives do not.
