My Current crap:
1990 GMC Jimmy, 135,000+ miles, bound to fall apart soon

My choices:
G/f's car:
1997 Chevy Cavalier, 51,000+ miles, 4 door Sedan, about as basic as you can get, manual windows/locks, cruise. I plan to tint windows and put in good stereo. I have been witness to the last 25,000 miles or so. I know its in great shape since it's driven like a granny car 😉
Cost:$3,000-4,000

Parents:
1995 Pontiac Grand AM, 91,000+, GT 4 door coupe, V6, Power windows/locks, great condition, Parents have had it since like 30,00 miles and dad takes great care of it. I plan to tint windows and put in good stereo
Cost: Well under $1,000 (just take over payments)

Only making $8 an hour right now and don't really want a large car payment right now.

I really only have feelings towards the Cavalier and those feelings are, I hate that car. Have you ever driven your girlfriends car? I must say, it's really something you should experience first hand. My girlfriend has a 98 Cavalier and it's a piece of junk. The whole steering column had to be replaced because it was bad, the radiator decided it didn't like its current job so it quit, just yesterday I felt the rear drums grab as a pulled away from a stoplight and they didn't release until I pulled the emergency brake to engage them. The car is underpowered for how heavy it is. Trying to move three people and luggage home for breaks is almost an exercise in futility. I wouldn't buy a Cavalier at this point if they were the only car out there.

97 cavalier for $3500 ish or 95 Grand am for $1000 - and you're seriously wondering which is the best buy...? BTW I voted GA 😀

Hate to say it but the Cavalier is probably the better choice for several reasons.

51k miles compared to 90+k miles and 2 years newer to trade.

Practicallity aside, I like the GA better and the lower initial cost (take over payments) cant be beat.

GET THE GA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BornStar18Yes I drive it about everyday. I have found nothing to dislike about how it drive really. (So far)

My 2 biggest choices are the the difference in mileage and how much more "loaded" the GA is over the Cavalier.
Even though the GA has run great so far, it's still a little up there in the miles and could go south anytime.

Right off hand I don't know how much I have to go out and get a different car, so really these are the most feasable right now.

I figure I will trade either one off in around 3 years.

I think if you end up with the Cavalier, you're going to be paying more money than you initially think. Getting the steering column replaced was $1000 all by itself. Cavaliers are very poorly assembled cars - the tradeoff for getting the price so low. It's out of warranty now too, so you eat any costs you kick up by driving it around. No offense, but I tend to laugh at people that drive around in even slightly modified Cavaliers. If you have the money to put a sticker on the rear window, you have the money to buy a better car.

Pick that one!

A few things to consider:

How's the GF getting around if you buy her car? You?
Check insurance before deciding

I would go for Grand Ma for $1k.

Both my parents and g/f are wanting to trade and get a new car

So the one I don't pick will be traded in

Sorry mithrandir2001 but walking isn't an option

And toant103 I don't like the looks of either Toyota or Honda, they just don't turn my head

That's exactly what I was thinkin!! I see a Cavalier and the word "cheap" comes to mind right before "junk".
