Valve should make cheating a violation of the License Agreement, so that if someone is caught cheating, they'll be stuck buying another copy of Half-Life to get a new serial. I'm sure this would stop cheating once and for all.

Accusations of cheating are more rampant than cheaters. What happens when one of the many 14 year old server admins ban your CD key because you just got a few lucky headshots? There's just no possible way to stop the cheating altogether, it's time to move on to another game, or play exclusively at LANs.

That would infringe some kind of right.

Not a good idea.
Unless they can make you were using a private pay server that you had to sign an agreement for.

Punkbuster was the best thing to happen to HL in a while. Some new games (not ones by Valve I understand) will have Punkbuster built directly into the game so you won't need to download it or run it ... most players won't even know its there. But the server will know.

Think about these things when playing ____ (insert your favorite mod for HalfLife there):

1. The mod is free, you haven't paid for it. Your cost of Half-Life has been taken already.
2. You aren't paying a monthly fee directly to have the ability to play any of Half-Life and its mods.

(now wearing devil's advocate hat)
Sure, cheating does suck, but you simply cannot enfore a way for someone to use their online account -- unless its a pay/play basis (ala EQ, etc). If I want to cheat, I will cheat, no doubt about it and no one will stop me. Just because there are ten times the amount of people that don't cheat and would prefer that I don't cheat as well, doesn't mean squat to me. I've paid for my game, own my cdkeys and will play any game I want, any time I want, with any method I want. If you don't like it, quit the server and find another.
(now taking off devil's advocate hat)

Cheating sucks, the only way to get around it is to host games, with passwords, for you and your friends. Playing on servers that constantly have admins is nice as well, but I've been kicked and banned from servers for not cheating as well (especially when you make the admin your b!tch for last 12 rounds). Also, playing on servers with the latest TSC and PunkBuser does deter the most basic of cheaters, but it simply cannot prevent from the latest weekly cheat.

If you want the name of a FF (friendly fire)server with a large ban list, PM me for more info. The server resides is on the west coast and is plenty fast for 20 people. We have measures in place for anyone who tries to be an arse by team killing and team wounding -- any of that TK/TW will result is severe punishment.

Keygens don't work for online play, you guys should know that. Unless you get lucky, and the someone else who actually bought it is out of luck.

My take on cheating? Who gives a damn! if someone is cheating, fine, find a different server, or kick the fvckers

I'm sure everyone know the cd key is in the registry....in case anyone needs one, pay 3 bucks an hour at the "net cafes" and get a cd key. I think that is evil though.

I bought Half-Life Game of the Year Edition a while back. What kills me is that the CD-KEY thing prevents me and my wife/son from playing on the same server with my machine and my wife's machine. I installed the game on both machines, and I understand that I'm not supposed to do that. It just seems like there ought to be an exception, like a household-nuclear family license.

I've bought exactly ONE piece of software in duplicate: Tribes 2. Then my wife didn't care for it and I traded one of the for Max Payne. I think I'm doing good if I can get my main machine totally legitimate.

The other way to stop cheating is to go into your closet, find that old pair of running shoes, strap 'em on, and go for a run. It works!!
