I read somewhere that the real cause is that the Emperor Penguins elected a radical leftist leader and it had led to a dramatic increase in penguin-on-penguin violence. This obviously led to huge riots where the penguins smashed large areas of the continental shelves. Hopefully they learn their lesson before it is too late and elect a conservative leader who believes in family values and can make the penguin economy great again. I saw one of the candidates wandering around with orange face paint and a blonde wig who looks promising.

I also read somewhere that the population of some other penguin species is actually increasing but no idea if that is true or not.

They say that the penguin population is shrinking because they switched from clean coal™ to alternative energy sources like wind turbines and solar panels which gave everyone cancer.
