I am a taking in a 2 year course in Computer User Support. Im in my first term and gotta take a class that seems very simple. Its called concepts of computing and basicly just goes over all kinds of computer related topics. Well, me thinking I have it all figured out...I didnt study at all and missed a few questions on the test :( Just to make myself feel better....(or worse) Im gonna post a few question of the test and see how some of the anandtech peeps do on this seemingly simple stuff:)

1) Memory stores _____

a. the operating system and other system software that control the usage of the computer equipment.
b. application programs that carry out a specific task.
c. the data being processed by application programs
d. all of the above

2) Serial ports usallly connect devices that do not require fast data transmission rates, such as all of the following except a _____

a. mouse
b. keyboard
c. printer
d. modem

3) ____ are kept on a storage media such as a floppy disk, hard disk, CD-ROM, or DVD ROM and are input into the memory of a computer as needed.

a. Commands
b. Programs
c. User responses
d. All of the above

Yeah, d, c, b. Pretty simple stuff.

Keep in mind that the correct answers in any given test are not necessarilly the correct answers. I have taken many certification tests lilke MS, Novell, A+, Dell ad infinitum, that required a specific answer to a question that was wrong or questionable.

When it comes to taking these types of tests you have to play the game. Learn what is required to pass the test while, at the same time, knowing what the correct answer is.

When was the last time you stored "user responses" on a cdrom?

Yeah I attempted to argue on all of em ....but it didnt bring my score up....lol

Ive never seen a modem connect to a serial port.....

1 is certainly d.

2 could be b or c.
Mice and Modems use Serial ports in the COM1, COM2, etc sense of the word.

Keyboards, don't use Serial ports in that sense, but AT and PS/2 keyboard ports are serial in the single bit at a time sense.

Printers, while usually parallel are rarely serial port connected.

I would say c for 2 though, since it's talking about data rate requirements, and printers need higher data rate than keyboards.

3...Not sure what they mean by "User Responses"....but Programs certainly are, and Commands could be, if meant in the sense of internal OS commands such a dir or copy. They aren't stored explicitly, but they are part of command.com which is. But they could mean command in the sense of the user typing in "d i r" in which case, it's certainly b. But depending on which interpretation of command they mean, and what the hell they mean by User Responses, it could be d.

So it could be b or d. I'm unsure which.

Never seen an external modem before?
They are COM port connected.

I have, I've done it multiple times.

I've never stored "user commands" on a cdrom, though.

I agree with Viperoni.

Either the reputed answers are wrong (likely), or these are poor questions that leave the answer open to interpretation.

I missed question one by answering C , I was thinking RAM, and to my knowledge it dosent "store" anything....it just stores what being processed.......when ya turn yur comp off....its all "stored" in the HD.

I see now that I was wrong, but dammit!

My answer was B also....I dont have any reasoning there....I also cant see where user responses would be kept on any of the listed media. Dunno...maybe someone here can give an example.

Who wrote the test? Sounds to me like they're a little foggy on their computer terminology themselves...

Some printers can be connected through the seial port. An old HP IIISi at work has both serial and parallel connections.

I think ATOT has spoken, and have DECLARED the correct answers as being dcb
the test-writers may disagree, but who are they to know what they are talking about :p

I have a problem with the answer to number three.... the testmakers said the "correct" answer is d.

First of all, "commands" is very ambiguous as to what it refers to. Wouldn't commands essentially be the individual lines of a program? However, if commands refers to the instruction set architecture, this is already inherently part of the computer processor and not needed to be stored on any external media.

User responses implies that the "user" (the person sitting using the computer) must "respond" by actively inputting into the computer some data. How exactly could we store this data on a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM? After a user enters some data, it is stored in RAM (depending on what the program does with it), and the program must save it somewhere if it wants to keep it. How exactly to you store it onto a ROM media?

This is just my response against the academic "system" of education.

Don't you just hate these computer related tests? If Microsoft, Novell, Cisco and all the rest of the big names can't get their questions/answers right, what makes you think that a high school, college or tech school will do any better?
