Hercules Prophet 4500 64MB (Kyro II)

My GF purchased a Radeon 9100 from Compgeeks a couple of months back, anyway she got me to install it in her system and it would not allow any refresh rate above 60Hz - even although the figure changed in windows - still the same old 60Hz.

The only way to make the card do over 60Hz was through the advanced settings of Powerstrip. It would lock up while gaming (after producing rainbow colours!) - anyway this is an even longer story as the card was defective and she sent it back to Compgeeks for replacement.

Well today in the mail arrived the "Hercules Prophet 4500 64MB" as the replacement card for the defective Radeon 9100.

Well I admit I'm a bit out of touch with the Kyro II but as far as I can remember it was something similar in performance to the mid point between a GF2MX and a GF2 I think?

Certainly not a card of the same calibre as a R9100 as I see it...am I correct?

Why they would send a card of a much older generation (lower performing!) without advising her amazes me. :|

Any advice?

It was between gef2gts and ultra levels, directx 7 only (versus 8.1 for the 9100) with no hardware tnl. A bad deal unless the 9100 is 64bit memory

Turn off DDC in the driver control panel and use Refresh Force to force the correct refresh values.

Something like that. I'd return it for a refund because you got a raw deal.

As soon as I had the problem I was on Rage 3D with the problem - you can read about everything that was attempted with the card HERE

The rainbow colours and the system lock up were the final nail in the coffin :brokenheart:

As far as I was aware it was a 128bit version and it played HL2 very reasonably - for 5 minutes until the screen produced vertical lines (rainbow coloured) and locked up 🙁

In all honesty that could've been PowerStrip at fault. Leaving it running can make the system quite dicey at times.

I'm not sure if you looked at the rage 3d thread or not - but I did actually get a set of drivers from hercules (via compgeeks tech support!) that installed and finally allowed the card to run at 100Hz which was great!

With just these drivers running it also developed the vertical rainbow pattern 🙁

My original glee....😀

Well I don't know what happened today - perhaps the planets aligned or something.

Was on the phone to compgeeks who supplied the card and they said that I was using the wrong drivers..cats, omegas and original drivers were no good supposedly...

Updated the drivers with the latest Hercules drives and yup still the same problem, got an RMA number from compgeeks to send the card back for replacement but then decided to call Hercules tech support.

Well he was not too sure what the problem was either but he did ask if I could see all of the ATI option tabs in the display settings. I could not even although the driver was supposedly installed.

So anyway...after much fiddling around and updating drivers I eventually rebooted to set the desktop/monitor to 100Hz with the latest CATS! WOO HOO!

I think I will be staying away from the Radeon 9100 from now on though....

Hopefully this is the problem solved and thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I'm replacing the HD in my Emachine M6810 tonight so I hope my R9600 does not give me any grief.

Uhmm..now just as I was typing that sentence above I got a white vertical line and the monitor switched off

Fortunately a power on and off sorted it out...

Which turned to...
I forgot to say that I had a couple of the "vertical white line" shutdowns last night.

Changed the refresh rate to 85Hz (from 100Hz) and all seems to be well now - I'm pretty certain that there is something wrong with this card but it's doing all it needs to for now.

And finally....🙁
Oh well this POS is definitely going back now.

It works fine in 2D applications but now consistently produces a vertical line pattern in 3D games and the PC requires a hard shutdown.

Time to look for a replacement card

The Kyro 2 card was priced with the GF2MX cards, but delivered performance comparable to GF2 GTS/Ultras. Unfortunately, it was released right before the GF3 and Radeon 8500 series and only boasted DX7 support. Add the driver issues into play, and the Kyro 2 chip was a disappointment. It could have been a contender, if it'd had more support. Tile Based Rendering can be a very effective technology, when used properly.

I don't know a whole lot about Kyro II except it used tile-based rendering like stated above. But my Dimension 4700 came with built-in Intel GMA900 video. While waiting for my second 6600GT, I've loaded many games to see what would happen. I thought it'd do really poorly, but that is NOT the case at all!

The reason I posted here is that reading Anand's article about the GMA900 told me that this graphics adapter is based upon Kyro II architecture. The point is that this "chinzy, good for nothing POS" really opened my eyes!

Far Cry runs fine at low details and resolution, screen is just darker which I adjusted gamma for. Older OpenGL games (Soldier of Fortune II, etc) can play with details turned up at 1280x1024 very smooth. I have Doom3 installed, but haven't ventured there yet! Halo runs as good (or better) than the GF4 440 Go in my laptop. UT 2004 runs really well at medium details and resolution, but there is a small problem with flashing textures (this was found in Anand's article).

To be honest, at the resolutions I play, this graphics is perfectly acceptable for me, but I'm not picky about eye candy. Sure, it looks great, but as always game play is the most important!

What resolutions do you play at?

The 17" Dell LCD, which was free with my PC, limits resolution to a native 1280x1024. In older games I can max it out without any problems, BUT Far Cry, Halo, etc I have had to back it down to 1024x768 or lower.

Don't get me wrong, I WILL replace this with a more capable card for gaming. But the performance really impressed me for a built in graphics. Anand's review from the summer showed pretty dismal FPS, but as a no-cost backup this is great!

Well they sent the replacement for the Kyro II based card and now it appears to be a GeForce 2 Ultra based Hercules card.....😕

They had actually asked my GF what to do about the situation but for some reason instead of just crediting her account they went ahead and shipped out a completely different card yet again 🙁

Presumably this card will perform slightly better than the Kyro II but nowhere near the performance of the Radeon 9100....?

They should have just refunded yor money, because the GF2 Ultra is about as fast as a Radeon 7500. The 9100 is based on the 8500 so....your in the same boat again, but with different paddles.

Damn, demand your money back, leave a nasty comment at resellerratings, and never buy anything from them again. That's frickin unbeleivable.

Yep, at this point, DEMAND all of your money back and also the card you PAID for. Do not take this from them. Just hearing this is giving me heard disease...so many companies are just plain dumb...or crooked.
