I got in on the FIC Radeon 9200 64MB (128-bit) AGP 8x card at Microcenter deal, and last night I installed the UT2K4 demo, and it actually runs pretty darn well. I was even playing online over dialup, and not doing too badly.

The 9200 is basically just a renamed 9000, so if the Hercules card in question also has a 128-bit memory bus, then it's performance should be similar. The Hercules might even overclock more (to 9000 Pro levels). My FIC unfortunately doesn't overclock significantly above stock core or mem speeds, or I get errors and artifacts.

Download the "softmodded" drivers in order to be able to overclock with ATITool or RivaTuner, because the stock drivers "lock" the clock-speed registers on the card on bootup. The "softmodded" ones have that patched out, apparently. Just be careful if the ATI drivers do a "VPU recovery", because that also sets the timings back to stock speeds and sets the lock, until you power-cycle again.

Probably doesn't work with the HDTV dongle though. That's all I really need right now. Even 9100's [based off of 8500 core] are untested. Boo.

The 9100s should work fine just like the 8500s.

Yes, but according to HTPCNews, it doesn't. Hence reports are conflicting. I got one, so when my 9600 comes I'll test it, at lesat then it won't be a complete loss.

I noticed something interesting. All of the 9100 cards that I've seen offered online, seem to only have a DVI-D port (digital-only), not the more common and flexible DVI-I (analog and digital) port. Not sure if that was just a limitation of the OEM 9100 cards, or the 9100 family in general. Haven't really seen a retail-box 9100 to compare specs with. (AFAIK all 8500's DVI ports are DVI-I, OEM or retail.)

Edit: To clarify, I am: a) assuming that the DVI component video output dongle requires analog signal support (DVI-I), and implying that because of b) Radeon 9100 cards appear to only support digital DVI connections (DVI-D), not analog, that c) it is unlikely that the component video dongle will work on Radeon 9100 cards.

If the dongle does in fact have its own RAMDAC internally, then it should work with any card that supports DVI-D and provides the proper output sync frequencies. But I would think that it would be cheaper and easier to build one that just made the wiring connections necessary, and used software driver tricks involving hardware colorspace-conversion and gamma-ramp LUT tricks to enable the conversion between RGB and YPbPr.

No,my Visiontek 9100 Retail Box is DVI-D to the best of my knowledge as well. Maybe the trick is that it works with all DVI-I cards? I have no idea, it would be nice if it did. I don't know why ATI would put 'magic pins' on their cards. I have also seen generic (non-ATI) ATI DVI to HDTV adapters as well, so someone must have figured it out.

Some peoples' TV's don't have RGB [BNC connectors, slide+twist], VGA [HD15], or DVI [A/D]. I know mine only has YPbPr, which is the one this dongle supports. So far only DVI is superior to YPbPr, but that may have the 'copyright bit' capability. This is all my info, though.
