Jimi Hendrix was the greatest guitarist in rock history, according to a list of guitar greats produced by Rolling Stone magazine.
Hendrix set his guitars and the rock world alight with his versatile and vigorous performances before his death in 1970 aged 27.

He beat Duane Allman - from the Allman Brothers - to the number one spot on the Rolling Stone list.

But only two women were listed in the top 100 - Joni Mitchell at 72 and Joan Jett at 87.

BB King, one of Hendrix's idols, was at number three while Eric Clapton was in fourth place.

for rock musicians, hendrix, allman, and clapton are good choices. Not going to comment on the order or on omissions, but these three were fantastic musicians.

there are some very underappreciated musicians out there, overshadowed by the money machine that is marketing

I think Hendrix is most definitely one of the best guitarists that has lived, however I am not so sure if I would say he is the greatest guitarists either. I think in many cases he scores extra points for living fast and dying relatively young. Again, this is not to say he was not a most excellent guitarist, but I just wouldn't consider him the greatest.

That they ranked Duane Allman as one of the best gives the list credibility

Yep, I rank him right up there with Jimi as an innovator. He truly invented modern slide guitar, and many have tried to duplicate his style and failed miserably. And isn't it strange how all the greats seem to get taken from us in their prime, Jimi, Duane, SRV.
And even Clapton who has survived, lost his young son to tragedy.
