How many here have hemophilia or know someone who does?

Statistically hemophilia is 1 in 20000, which gives an approx. 20,000 people in the US. Hemophilia is a blood clotting disorder; some people have the misconception hemophiliacs bleed faster, we bleed longer. The clotting disorder stems from the malformed proteins involved in blood clotting. Hemophilia is a X-linked genetic disorder and is typically not found in women, though it is possible. If there really are 140,000 people on anandtech then there should be about seven hemophiliacs.

Yea, my sister has some form of this blood disorder, forget what it is called but every time she has to go in for any type surgery it is a very big big ordeal. Twice now we have nearly lost her on the operating table due to excessive bleeding. Once she had her stomache worked on... she was in the ICU for days after the surgery it was touch and go. They had to give her some kind of meds. I am not real familiar with it though. Maybe you can enlighten us on this disorder.

No, but my spouse (Fermilevel on here) does. At least one of his brothers does too. The form they have isn't the most dangerous kind.

Females do not usually have hemophilia, the only chance comes from a father that has the disease and a mother that is a carrier. Even still there is a 50/50 chance of getting full hemophlia. Usually women with a blood-clotting disorder have Von Willebrands disease. Essentially the same idea; there is a malformed protein during blood clotting that prevents the clot. I understand treatments include nasal sprays or IV injections.

There are several lineages that have hemophilia running through them. The most common ones, of course, are from inbreeding in royal families; Queen Victoria and Alexis the son of Czar Nicolas II. Mine doesn't come from either lines. My mother is a carrier, my grandmother is also a carrier, but my grandmother is pure norwegian. So, I don't any ancestors in either lines.
