So, I've got the PS3 set up, wireless is working just fine. The PS3 seems to be able to play music and videos that are on a PC or laptop. I'm able to see the files, for example blah.avi and doh.mp3; however, when I go to play them, the PS3 doesn't like the files.

My question is this: Does the PS3 play mp3 files, avi files, wma files etc? Do I need to copy the files onto the PS3 in order to play the file?

Thanks :)

mp3 files should play without any problem for the most part. For you video files perhaps they were encoded using a codec not currently supported by the PS3 or you media server.

I haven't had any problems with mp3. If you're using WMP's Library, make sure that the files are displaying correctly in there (sometimes it doesn't grab them properly).

As for avi files, the PS3 is only guaranteed to play files that adhere to the official Divx standards. You can use something like VirtualDub to correct the files.

From what I've observed in my 5 days of PS3 ownership, the PS3 is a lot more picky about what video files it will play compared to the 360 (which wasn't perfect either).

The PS3's visualizations for music and GUI for video and DVD/BD absolutely KILL the 360's though. If Sony got the playback support working on the level of the 360, I'd have no problem switching to the PS3 as my main media center.

EDIT: Clarified my stance above. I think the PS3's menu system is a bit cluttered, but it does have a few things going for it.
