I've been trying to install windows 98 on a dell dimension XPS 300. I keep getting the following message the first time it boots after install:

Windows protection error

C:\windows\system\vmm32.vdx
missing/unable to load.

I've tried to re-install 2 times now, once with an ATI 64MB VIVO and again with a Voodoo3 2000. Each time I re-install I do a full format of the HDD.

Any idea what the problem is? I just want to get this crumby little computer going so my roommate can play CS with me.

I had a problem with .vxd files before, with windows 95...I think its a bad installation disk, so if you can, try your best to get another win98 installation disk.

Ok, I found another copy of windows 98 and tried to install it, same problem. I then tried to install windows ME, at the same point in the install I got a windows protectio nerror message aswell. I also tried to do a reinstall using different RAM, still the same problem. Any other ideas?

Try Win2K. If that doesn't work I would try and get a different HDD.

Maybe create a new partition on the drive and install Windows to that partition... they're the only things I can think of to help you narrow down the problem you're having.
