I just Installed windows 98 SE (formated HD and started over)and for some reason everytime I download something or downloading the web page the entire computer slows down almost to a crawl and gets all choppy. Once the file is done downloading the computer is back to its normal self and flys. My system is a Abit bx6, pII 450 running with the turbo option to 463mhz, 256 megs of ram, seagate cheetah HD for running windows, UltraDma western digital hard drive just for games, diamond fireport 40 scsi card, 32x speed scsi cd drive, eide cdrecordable drive, 3com ext. courier, Elsa Gladiac 32meg GeForce 2 video card, monster sound mx300, and a 21 inch hitachi superscan monitor. I also have a permanent swap file set up for 150 megs and Im using the latest drivers for everything. Ive tried both IE and netscape and cant seem to figure it out. The only thing new in my system is my GeForce 2 but I dont understand why that would be cause slowdown or chopiness while downloading. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you tried an internal modem? The external does slow things down a bit. Kinda like my zip drive running on a cable, really slow.Have you tried turning on the system monitor to see if your resources take a nose dive? Check your system tools to see if you are getting a conflict on the modem.

You really need to set your swap file size larger - should be 3x the amount of RAM you have - thats a little less than 1/2 the amount of RAM - really really bad.

And as far as the modem thing goes, I would have guessed a bad install with the drivers or possibly the wire went kaput somewhere. Like PAT suggested, try swapping in an internal/different modem and see what happens. Or reinstall the drivers for your modem. That sounds like something a Winmodem does (but yours isn't)

Actually I have my system set up for 150 minimum 650 maximum and it never gets larger than 150 megs. I dont have an internal modem to try so it kinda stinks but ive tried everything from drivers to things i have loaded and nothing makes a difference. Its getting ridiculous now that everytime a web page loads or i download something the computer slows down to a crawl. Im at a loss.

Try turning off Active Desktop and see if that improves things.
Don't believe it has a thing to do with your swap file.
