Need some help here-

I used the default defrag utility in Win XP to defrag my main hard drive last night, where all my program files are located.
Computer was working fine today when I used it briefly.
Tonight I decided to reboot since I defragged.
Upon rebooting as soon as XP starts up I get a BSOD "unmountable boot drive" error.

Did my defrag kill my OS?

What are my options at this point, and if I need to reinstall do I lose all my programs on my HDD?? :(

TIA-

defective hard drive. defrag is just a software program that reorganizes data. Go download the diagnostic tool for whatever brand hard drive it is and run a full test on it. They usually offer their diagnostic tools in a bootable floppy disk and bootable ISO.

I have never heard of that problem occuring. However you can do a non destructive reinstall of the OS. This just reinstalls the OS and does not delete anything. However you could run into some programs complaining of missing registry files and other problems from programs that throw stuff into the windows folder. If you do a reformat then you will lose all the info.

And just to make sure...there are no other devices hooked up to your pc right? Such as a ipod or external hard drive? I am sure there arent so sorry i couldnt be more helpful

Klin might be right and i didnt see the post till id posted mine so id try what Klin said first
