Help! XP keeps hardlocking during bootup?

This never happened before. I got home from the gym, and there was a light blue screen with CHKDSK running. It kept outputting "correcting volume image" or something, but it wouldn't stop. I let it go for about a half-hour then restarted. It now will boot up fine till it starts windows and a box pops up saying "WINLOGON.EXE - BAD IMAGE....commctl32.dll is not a valid windows image, please check this against your installation diskette." Then it freezes, and I have to power cycle the computer to get it to restart. Any ideas? Can I save my files somehow? Is this not as desperate as it seems? Please help me, I live through my computer.

It should walk you through the process, just keep your eyes open and choose the logical choices. Basically it's going to check all of the windows system files and replace any that are messed up with new ones from the cd.
