Help- would this setup work?

Here's my current CPU hsf.

Since I have never replaced a heatsink before, nor have I found a compatibl hsf combo, I'm wondering if the following would work:

> Removing the stock Coolermaster fan (only the fan)

> Installing a 60-to-80 mm fan adapter

> Installing an 80 mm CPU fan OR purchasing an 80x80 hsf, and only installing the fan part

What kinds of results can I expect, and can you point me to a quiet 80mm fan (even if part of an hsf) that looks like it would fit?

Thanks in advance for any help.

(AMD XP2600+ (T-Bred), stock speed, FSB@166 MHz, current temp while idle @ 53 degrees C)

Check out SVC.

You should be fine in doing what you want to do. I think SVC has 60mm to 80mm converters that let you use a 80mm on a 60mm heatsink. As far as quiet 80mm fans go, I'd recommend the Panaflow L1A (also avialable at SVC).

You say you can't find a compatible HSF to work. What board are you using with the 2600+? I would think most all of the newer HSF from Thermaltake and Thermalright for the Barton XP chips would work just fine.

You want to keep it quiet but keep it cool... Try this, get an all copper base and fins, heatsink that has a 60mm fan on it. Remove the fan, put the 60 to 80 converter on it, and get a vantec stealth 80mm fan.
I've not tried this myself, but have read about people doing it, and it working well.
A better solution would be to get an entire system that is alread sold at that size. I love the new Zalman 7000A-AlCu that I got! (has a 92mm quiet fan on it).
