Help with .xvid.avi file?????

I have a file that has a xvid.avi extention. First of all, is that an avi or an xvid or both, etc?
Normally I would go into Sonic MyDVD and just select the file and it would automatically encode it to dvd but it's not liking this file format or something.
The error is
"The software that's used to decode the media is not available on this system. Installing the correct decoders for the files you are working with may help correct the problem. -47001."
Does it mean it doesn't have the correct codec installed? I can play the video fine with WMP10. I just need to get this on a dvd asap. Wanted to watch tonight on regular dvd player.
Any ideas?

xvid is not an extention, just a codec

xvid-encoded files are going to be .avi

try renaming the file and see if that helps

Thanks for the explanation. I should have mentioned that I tried renaming it to just filename.avi and go the same error.

It sounds like you only have a DirectShow filter for whatever that's encoded in (likely xviid). You might need to download a Video For Windows (VFW) codec in order to do the conversion you're trying to do.

You can find the proper codec on this website:
XVID

Thanks everyone. I ended up using vso divx to dvd and it converted/burned it and works fine.

I'll check into the codec issue and see if I can prevent it from occuring in the future.

Just to bring up this old thread ...

This was great advice. I was trying to use VirtualDubMod for the first time and got a funny error message (i've forgotten) when trying to join two xvid files. I went to this site, downloaded the latest build and then VirtualDubMod recognized my xvid files properly so it could join them.

Thanks.

'nutha option which I use is fddshow which includes a VFW component. The libavcodec decodes all MPEG-4 types so is better than installing individual slightly different implementations (DivX, XviD, et alli) or changing FOURCC's which can result in poor decoding.
