Help with wireless router configuration

So I finally went out and bought the wireless setup for my roomates and I.

we decided on 802.11b and so far it is working without a hitch and I am completely satisfied.

3 desktops, 1 laptop all installed and working. The farthest point away from the router still gets 70% strength on my laptop.

ok, my question is:

How do I configure the router to open up certain ports? Like I'd like to be able to use AOL Instant Messenger and stuff like that, that requires incoming ports to be open.

I have a D-Link 614+

Thanks for the help.

The way to open a port depends on the Router. Each manufacture has his own "Shticks" to go about it. Each one has his way of organizing the Menus. You have to read the Manual in order to know how to do it. The term that it is referred to could be Port Mapping, Port Opening, etc. In a Virtual Server.

List of ports that are associated with various applications can be found here:

Special Applications - Port List.

i have a wired linksys router. I open the web config and there is a forwarding section that you can do port ranges or specific ports (you will want static ips for this though)

I don't think you will need to open incoming ports for AIM. I have had 5 computers runnign aim behind my router. Things liek webserv, ftp etc you will need open, but aim shoudlnt be one of them.
