Help with Wireless network

I have just purchased a SMC7004WBR barricade, and a 3COM Airconnect PCMCIA card for my Dell Inspirion 8000 notebook. I got the ethernet portion up and running without a snag, however the wireless portion is pretty new to me and I need a bit of help.
Problem is relatively simple the PCMCIA card is not finding the Acess point (SMC7004WBR).
I am running the dreaded winblows ME. The question that really has me puzzled is the SMC refers to channels such as 6 for North America and 7 for Japan etc. While the 3COM card has no channels but some sort of area number which defaults to 101. I tried putting them both at 6 but still no link! The barricade doesnt give me any other options besides this ESSID thing which was set to default! I changed it to ANY after reading up on a page from www.practicallynetworked.com but that didnt help much either.
If anyone knows how to get these two pieces of hardware up and running please help me out! Thanks

Are both the cards the 802.11b new standard? If not that may be your problem... I have worked a little with them, but not much...I can try to help though
