Help! With Windows XP Pro

I never had such a hard time installing Windows XP Pro before. I don't know why it's happening now.

I just finish building my PC. Everything works fine and dandy, it's just getting windows to work properly is a pain in the arse.

Is it my new motherboard that's causing the problem?

Ok, there are a few problems that needs looked at.

*1st - During installing there were two dialog boxes that said it couldn't find and it needed the files from the SP2 CD. Doing a browse to find the files did not help. The two files were:
-cmprops.dll
-iexplorer (I think this is Internet Explorer because I DON'T have internet explorer on my computer and I CAN'T do any Windows Update or Activate my WindowsXP Pro.

Why does it ask me for these files, since this CD clearly is Windows XP Pro WITH Service Pack 2?

Edit: I need to add that cancelling the two dialog boxes makes the installation proceed.

**2nd - Why are the windows services ALWAYS off. If I go into services.msc, all the services are turned off. For example, I had problems installing from the Linksys CD because one of the services (DCOM) was turned off. After turning it on, the installation worked fine. Once I restart the computer, all the services are off again! The startup type is already set on automatic, but it still turns off every restart.

DHCP client is also off, thus not allowing me to go online. Turning it on results in going online (I know because I did a antivirus update with Kaspersky). But I can't go on internet because I have NO Internet Explorer!

***3rd - I don't have msconfig. If I type it into the run dialog box, it gives an error saying "Windows cannot find 'msconfig'." Now I read that you can download msconfig.exe if you don't have it on your computer. But what I'm getting at is why didn't Windows XP install it for me in the first place.

Please, does anyone know the solution.

Is there something I need to set in the bios before I install Windows?

is this an original XP disk, or an SP2 slipstreamed disk? Is there physical damage to the disk?

No physical damage to the disc. The disc is brand new.

I had an XP SP2 slipstream CD last night and had the same problem.

I thought it might be the CD, so I went out today to buy a brand new WinXP SP2 CD. Exact same problem happened.

Wow, that's got to be the worst install I've heard of. If you got another CD and having the same issue, then I'd suggest start swapping out various parts to see what might be causing this problem. I'd start with the optical drive and go from there.

I don't see how anything could cause that, but who knows...

The installation problems (windows' inability to locate certain setup files) frequently are related to a bad media (damaged CD), incompatible memory or faulty memory, among others. For a starter, run memtest or try w/ different memory or configuration.

I already ran memtest for two hours, and it passed 2 rounds with no error.

I'll try and use a different sata port. Don't know if that would help at all.

You'll need to run Memtest longer than that.

Replace the IDE cable connecting your DVD drive.

Sorry.

I overlooked something. After people kept saying it might be the DVD drive, I checked it and saw that it was set as a slave. Benq ships their DVD drives with default setting as slave apparently. So after changing the jumpers to master, the installation went fine without a hitch.

But I am running into another problem now. Everytime I play COD2, the game freezes like 5-10 minutes into the game. It freezes my whole computer actually.

Also worthy to note that after I finished the installation the first time, and clicked on Play Now, it pops up with an error.

From researching, it shows that COD2 is 100% compatible with X2 processors.

I ran a Memtest for 8 hours, and it went 12 passes without any errors.

Do you think it's the videocard, and how might one troubleshoot the videocard?
