i have a simple home network with 3 computers. two are xp and can interact fine. the third is win98. win98 can ping both computers successfully, and they can ping it. the others can see win98 listed in network places, but can't open it. win98 only has itself listed in network places. everything that can be is set to auto on all computers, and the router. what could be wrong?

Did you use the network setup program that XP has, that you have to use to make Win98 network properly for file sharing with XP? 🙂 You can make the Network Setup floppy by running the Network Setup Wizard in WinXP.

Are all three computers, in the same workgroup, in the network properties? Does the 98 machine have file and print sharing installed in the network properties?

Try typing the name of whatever computer your looking for in the run box.

Go to 'start> run' then in the run box type '\\win98' or whatever the name really is. The double back slash tells it to look on the network. Doing this from the 98 box should get you a password prompt from the xp's. Trying this from the xp boxes looking for the 98 should get you a c: folder, and whatever else you have shared on that machine.

If this doesn't work then double check the network settings.
