People have complained about the black space on the right with very large monitors and high resolutions. Any suggestions for that?


I've made sites that expand the entire page, but then everything gets stretched out and the design doesn't look so pretty. I've seen many sites use a fixed width table. I experimented with the black area last night, I made it that custom-yellow, but then it's overwhelmingly bright. Maybe I should just take my background image, invert it and put it in the black area? Would that make it less irritating?

I would definitely purchase from this site. It looks professional enough without all the fluff. I do websites for a living and it's a definite go in terms of design for commerce. The only thing I would add are mouseover effects to the navigation links (left and top). The effect goes a long way.

EDIT>>> Whoops... was rating your old version. 😉 Your new version isn't much of an improvement in my opinion, but don't take that too hard. Usually someone doing a new/upgrade site works with a different format altogether... sometimes with different color combinations. It's fine, like before.

For your Netscape issue, for starters... I would remove all those CLASS statements. Do you know how to code without Frontpage? I've never used it before... isn't there a way to work with Netscape as your "Preview browser" instead of IE? Anything that looks fine in Netscape will work the same in IE, just not vice versa, as you're finding out now.

Most of the Netscape issues are mixed width types (pixels vs. percent) and tables / nested tables not being closed properly.

Well I'm glad the original site looks professional, that one is mine too. 🙂

I'm not striving for the new version to be a radical improvement... my main goals were to simplify navigation, make editing easier by using CSS, and a faster load time. I attempted to completely redo the layout, until I realized that what I had before was satisfactory.

I do know how to code without Frontpage, but there isn't anything I'm using propietary to the frontpage editor. I check the HTML constantly. Why would you remove the CLASS statements? That's how I'm interfacing with the style sheet. If I want to change the sizes of all the cells in the main table, I do it once in CSS and the entire site changes. Or are you implying I should be using IDs instead?

So - since you approve the original site, do you suggest I make the renovation look as close to it as possible? Is there anything in the new site you see as beneficial and I should keep? Any suggestions for either site? Thanks! 😀
 
This is my revision to the redo, took away the mouseover/textbox from the front page, fixed up the style sheet a little. I'm still welcoming suggestions!

On the front page, I added a single space to each cell that didn't have any content in it already, and that made the cell show up properly in netscape.

Now it appears to be working in Netscape 6.x.

To have a cell show up properly in NS when it doesn't have any content, it still needs some type of filler. I had to type in a space and FP puts in a &nbsp in the html. Seems to work.

Since I've gotten a lot of comments about the blank black space on the right side of the screen for those with very large resolutions, I've finally caved in and made the main content of the page expand to fit the screen. Everything seems to be working well except for one minor problem:

If there is almost no content in the Content cell, the cell wants to cave in! The cells to the left and right of the center area are fixed width, set in the style sheet. The IRONY of this is that it works properly in Netscape, and now IE6 is the culprit.

This isn't going to stop me from publishing the site, but still it's one of those discrepencies that confuses me and might kick me in the butt later down the road. Any ideas?

After this weekend I'll stop bumping this thread and give you guys a break from my silly fish site. 😱

Dreamweaver is good. Get rid of mouseovers, if you have Adobe ImageReady you can make rollovers without too much trouble and every browser will support them, unlike Nutscrape + webbots. For a website like that you're not going to need anything but HTML, maybe change them to .asp so you can use includes, or .shtml (for the same thing) if your server supports SSI. The only REALLY annoying thing I found was the 800x600 resolution cap. Want over 6.5? Make it resizable 😀

Argh, just tried viewing the newest version on my high-resolution screen at work and there's a couple of pages where the content cell is caving in. Even though the rest of the cells are staying fixed-width as dictated by the style sheet, the spacing cells to the left of the content cell increases in width if the content cell lacks a lot of content.

Help! 😱:disgust:
 
I see a section of the black outlining rim missing when I go to the contact and links sections.

The other thing I can suggest is pulling the text away from the black column on the right. In some cases, the text even touches the column.

I know, weird, isn't it? Those rim cells are fixed width, and the main body is suppose to expand the table to fill the screen. For some reason the body area caves in if there isn't a lot of text.

Good point on the text, I've been meaning to add some padding there but haven't done it yet.
