So i was able to transfer a video file from my camcorder to my computer, using Adobe Premier 1.5. Once adobe premier finished transfering the video file, the end result was the following: A 30 minute AVI that was around 6 gigabyte with only 1600 kbps bitrate and a video resolution of around 700x480 pixels.... Compared to other avi files that are on my computer this file size is too large... Im wondering may someone please tell me what program i would use to compress it? other avi files with similar run time, and bitrate are around 200-400mb. Would a program like TMPGenc be ok?

its a raw .avi file
"other" avi files are likely XVID, DIVX etc
goto doom9.org and read
Video editing is not as easy as Apple/MS would make you believe they are.

Its not Raw avi, it is compressed DV video in a an AVI container file. DV is a lossless compression codec.

Yes, you will have to divx the file with Tmpgenc or Virtualdub or some other similar program. To do this you will have to have the proper codecs installed, and have the settings set properly. An n-pass encode will result in a better overall picture, but will take longer. I also suggest getting Lame MP3 encoder for audio. Like Homerboy said, head over to doom9 and start reading.

Yup, sounds like it.

You can use Premier to encode as well. Make sure you originally transferred with the lossless DV codec (your bitrate seems low) that will give you a bit copy of the original DV on your camera.

Even Windows movie maker will work if you want windows media file.

Thats what I was going to recommend if all he wants is a simple video file (smallish) to play/edit etc.

Windows Movie Maker is perfectly fine for such things.

alright i have a dual core processor so hopefully it wont take too long. I have k-lite codec pack installed. Do you know a good guide at doom9.net or videohelp.com that would instruct me on how to transfer the raw (or DVD) avi to a compressed divx/xvid avi?

Cant seem to find a guide on doom9.net to do this...

By the way i tried using windows movie maker to capture the video with windows movie maker and the quality was unbearable and i only did WMV format..

Just try re-capturing it with WinDV and it should end up the same size as most of your other AVI's. Not sure why your file ended up so big, is it a regular Mini-DV camcorder or is it something else?

download virtualdub and fiddle your way through it if you are in (an apparent) rush.

It should be that big, DV is over 200MB/m of runtime.
