Help with UT!

I've been living with this problem for some time now and since the fans on Anandtech Forums seem like a real knowledgeable bunch I figure you guys may have an answer.

Here is my setup:

1Ghz Athlon Classic (non-overclocked)
Abit KA7
Corsair PC 133 CAS2 running at 133 CAS3
32Mb GeForce DDR DT 5.3 (6.18 crashes)
SB Live Liveware 2.0
8X SCSI Plextor CD-R
300W PS
12X DVD
Westell External DSL modem (Bell Atlantic)
Win98/Win2K SP1 Dual Boot

Whenever I play UT online whether in Win98 or 2K my PC eventually locks up and the DSL modem light goes nuts. Any suggestions other than switching DSL companies (which may not even help)?

BTW: My ping times even before lockup are low 100's.

Try a different set of Detonator drivers yet?

BTW, how are you liking BellAtlantic's (now Verizon) overal service/experience? Are you experiencing timeouts with your gateway or DNS?

what chipset is the ka7? is it one of those that needs 4-in-1 drivers? (I haven't been keeping track of this stuff very well have I)

Let's see. BA has been good lately but I completely despise them since my line was down for about 5 weeks at one point and 1 week several months earlier. I've had the service for almost a year now but because of my earlier experiences I am in the process of switching to Phoenix Networks. I don't get any timeouts my line is always up but I don't know what is causing the lockup. I seem to have the same problem in Everquest but the Win2K stack seems to be more stable than 98 and appears to reset itself in EQ but not UT.

I believe my Via drivers are 4.03 or whatever the latest ones are. I must have all the detonator drivers but have the same problems with all of them except for 6.18 which really detonated my system.

DoggieDog,
You can still probably get a credit to your phone bill (or whichever way it's billed to you) by calling tech support. Thing is you need to talk with someone in Tier3 tech support to do the credit for 5 weeks. That's $50 down the drain! I'm sure if you explain to them the situation they'll authorize a credit to appear in next month's bill. I know this because my connection would timeout constantly. I'd end calling tech support WAY too many times and I guess the rep felt bad and said I would get credit for WHATEVER time my service was down until the problem was found.

To this day it still times out. One of my buds should have his Phoexnix DSL (which is SDSL for a limited amount of time) up already.

Err...yep I went off topic😛

Doggie,
I get the same thing on my DSL. Try getting BlackICe defender. It will show you what's going on. Most of the time when playing UT you get UDP port probes and ICMP unreachable storms.
Haven't quite figured out why that happens - unless folks are trying to 'take a look around' - but I'd bet a dime that's what's going on with yours.
BlackIce allows you to block those who do that. Makes for lot's smoother operation.
BTW The LiveWare 3.0 is a must!

One other thing.... switch from the ASUS to the NVIDIA drivers. I have the same card, and it's a little twitchy with the ASUS driver.

Sorry my mistake I do have liveware 3.0. As for getting pinged. I have Zone Alarm so I know its not a problem caused from the outside. I really think there must be something in the setting.

BTW: MaxFP, I've been there and done that with those Bozos at BA. I got my credit but the point was really with their POS service. I called in to report the problem with my line not synching after 2 days. After 2 weeks of calls and over 40 hours on hold, I get someone who tells me what problem? There is nothing in the record telling me you have a problem. Which then put me back at square one, please give us 48-72 hours to diagnose the problem. Then 3 days later I get a call from BA Customer satisfaction asking how I rated their service and speed in resolving my problem. I said what resolution? They said on file my problem was fixed, which was news to me since my line was still dead. At that point I gave up and mysteriously 2 weeks later my line was back to normal. (Since this is a monitored site I left out all the expletives I yelled at BA).

Sorry for the rant.
