Isn't Plum Tree Island closed to the general public? As a former bombing range, unexploded munitions are still being found.

If it is that is news to me. I temember at least part of the park being open to the public when i was younger. Think it was called cow something or another. It was pretty. Too bad if its completely closed off now.

If that is your planned West Coast itinerary:
Get the car in Vegas
1) save $$ and do not eat at the buffets on the strip - twice the price as off strip.
Palms, Rio,Strat,Sams will all get you better value for your money.
2) Take a helo tour of the Grand Canyon
3) Drive up to the North rim to get a different view/perspective of what you see if you took a helo tour. Driving to the South Rim (Arizona will kill 4-5 hours each way)
4) Drive up to one of the National Parks in Southern Utah.

Yosemite is a 8-10 hr drive from Las Vegas. Multiple ways to get there; you have the option of going through Death Valey if you like.

While operating out of SF, go see the rRdwoods; there are 4-5 areas within a half day drive of SF. Well worth it. I saw them in '08 and was impressed, so was my wife. Our two cocker spaniels went crazy trying to figure out how to mark a tree.

That's what I was going to ask...his P&N rhetoric shows he hates the US of A...why would he want to vacation here?

Well, we hate France and give it shit all the time. Why the fuck are there so many people there from here?

Here are a few basics for SF to pick from, decide what you like:

- Down the voast: Monterey, Carmel (this also works for the drive from Las Vegas -you can add LA and Hollywood as well). Beautiful seaside village type things.

- If you do that, visit Hearst Castle. Amazing place, check the web for info.

- Up the coast - nice oceanside drives.

- Wine Country/Napa Valley - you might not like the wine, but some of the best gourmet food - the top rated restaurant in the US is there though you can't go (reservations six months in advance to the exact day), there's a wine country railroad ride you can see with google also. Just pretty grape growing scenery.

- Ferry Building in SF - dozens of gourmet stores; the way I describe it is 'they have TWO stores dedicated to olive oil'. Nice place to visit, view of ocean, alcatraz prison.

- I can't really recommend Alcatraz but some people love it - it's a park now, a former maximum security prison with tours, take a boat.

- Golden Gate Park - SF's counterpart to Central Park in New York, beautiful trees and grounds with two world-class museums - one art, one science.

Google on 'De young museum' and the science museum in the park - it has amazing sea life, an indoor rain forest, an observatory and a lot more.

- Silicon Valley - can't really recommend it for a visit unless you REALLY want a picture next to Apple or eBay.

- If you're a fan, the Walt Disney family museum is in the city in a pretty area.

But do try the buffet at the Bellagio, ranked the best in the city, about $30-$35.

I have a revised plan for the West Coast. What do you think?

I'll be arriving around the 14th of June. I have some business to take care off and will be spending a few days in the Eastern Cities as well.

25th June Fly to Vegas from Phil/NYC 4 nights
29th Fly to Salt Lake City, rent car. Sleep in SLC overnight.
30th Drive to Tetons National Park. Sleep in Jackson overnight.
1st Drive to Yellowstone NP
3rd Drive back to Jackson. Fly to NYC

Excluding food and shopping, that trip is costing me at estimated $2500 for the both of us. Seems right?

Where should I spend the fourth?
5th Back to Karachi

The only thing with this itinerary is that I will miss LA/SF. I could fly to those cities on the weekend preceding the 25th (which is a Monday), but I'm getting a feeling it will get too hectic. A friend of mine has an Intervalworld holiday exchange membership which he is letting me utilize. There are frequent slots in LV but I can't find one on my desired dates as yet but they might open up. There are many slots available in Orlando and 5* hotels keep popping up now and then. It would cost me an additional $300x2 for the tickets and $200 for the exchange fee for the week. It would also mean I would have to sacrifice a couple of days from Vegas and Yellowstone at the least to get 4-5 days there. My wife isn't too keen on Orlando, but with a nice resort I may be able to convince her. At the moment, I'm not convinced myself.

I would consider dropping the Tetons and just focusing on Yellowstone which is huge and takes a lot of time to navigate during peak tourist season.

I disagree. I liked the Tetons more than Yellowstone.

OP, I'm glad you scaled back your ambition a little to focus on a couple places. You'll have more fun that way.

If you already have a rental car in Vegas, I would just drive to SLC. The drive is like 6 hours. Flying and going through the airport plus rental car facilities wont be much faster. You could even swing by Zion.

The only thing I can recommend in Orlando is parts of Disneyworld.

In Vegas, there isn't that much exciting - in a day you can see the big casinos, do some gambling if you want, the best thing there IMO are Cirque du Soleil's Ka, O, etc.

It's a bit hard what to recommend, you might like a Vegas show or Yellowstone.

How many minutes do you have to be at the check-in counter for USA domestic flights? I usually reach 45-55 mins before my flights here.

It's a one hour 15 mins flight. Accounting for reaching the airport, check-in, collecting bags and rental car in SLC (I haven't decided whether or not to rend a car in Vegas. Any point?), it should still take half the time. The longest I have driven has been 3 hours and I don't fancy driving 12 hours over 2 days. Flight might be cheaper too...

Not going to gamble, but will visit the big casinos. I'm going to catch a couple of shows (recommendations?), some fine dining and enjoy the hotel with my wife.

Again, for shows the first two I'd suggest are Cirque Du Soleil's O and Ka, followed by Mystere. The Beatles show is great if you like that.

There are big flashy magic shows also but one to avoid from bad reviews is the one with David Blain.

Lots of good dining but as I said one nice place to try is the Bellagio buffet.

The main reason to drive is if you will enjoy seeing more of the country - the US is very big.

Rental car in Vegas allows you to get off strip and do thing such as visit Red Rock (very pretty, 30 mins outside of town), and Hover Dam if you're into that.

US domestic flight checking bags, I would allow 1-1.5hrs. The LAS rental car facility is not at the airport and is a shuttle bus ride away. So you probably want to allow 25-30 minutes just for returning the car and getting to the airport itself.

Flight would be more expensive for 2 people. I would call the gas cost as being about $75.

Zion is really worth the drive by itself.
